Chapter 3 — The Empire Built on Lies

Three days later, Ashford Global collapsed.
The news spread everywhere.
BILLIONAIRE CEO ACCUSED OF FRAUD, MONEY LAUNDERING, AND CORPORATE MANIPULATION
Every television.
Every newspaper.
Every business network.
Nathan Ashford’s face was everywhere.
But this time…
Not because of success.
Because of his downfall.
Inside the Sterling family estate, Evelyn sat beside a large window overlooking the ocean.
For the first time in months, there were no cameras.
No lies.
No fear.
Just silence.
Her father entered holding two cups of coffee.
He placed one beside her.
“You haven’t slept.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“Neither have you.”
Alexander sat beside her.
“I was afraid.”
She looked surprised.
“My father was afraid?”
He nodded.
“Every day you stayed there, I was afraid.”
“Then why didn’t you come sooner?”
The question was quiet.
But painful.
Alexander looked down.
“Because you asked me not to.”
Evelyn remembered.
Months earlier.
She had called him after Nathan pushed her down the stairs.
She had cried.
She had wanted him to come.
But then she saw the bigger picture.
If Alexander appeared too soon, Nathan would disappear.
The evidence would vanish.
The truth would be buried.
“I needed them to reveal themselves,” she whispered.
Alexander nodded.
“You saved many people.”
Evelyn looked confused.
“What?”
“The money Nathan stole wasn’t just from your family.”
Her father placed a file on the table.
“Thousands of employees. Investors. Small businesses.”
Evelyn opened the folder.
Inside were documents proving everything.
Nathan and Celeste had destroyed lives for years.
She wasn’t just ending a marriage.
She was stopping a machine.
A knock came at the door.
A lawyer entered.
“Mr. Sterling.”
Alexander looked up.
“Yes?”
“The police have arrested Celeste Monroe.”
Evelyn remained silent.
The woman who had enjoyed her pain.
The woman who had counted every strike.
The woman who believed she was untouchable.
Gone.
But there was one person left.
Nathan.
The lawyer continued.
“Mr. Ashford requested a meeting.”
Evelyn looked toward him.
“Why?”
The lawyer hesitated.
“He says he wants to apologize.”
Alexander immediately shook his head.
“No.”
But Evelyn stood.
“I’ll go.”
Her father looked concerned.
“Evelyn…”
She smiled softly.
“I’m not going because I forgive him.”
May you like
A pause.
“I’m going because I want him to understand.”
