Chapter 4: The Wedding That Became an Arrest

Detective Brooks entered with two uniformed officers behind him.

He already knew my name.

He already had a warrant.

Within minutes, the ballroom transformed from a wedding venue into an active crime scene.

The music stopped.

Guests whispered in confusion as police quietly surrounded several exits.

My uncle Richard smiled when he saw me.

"You found the groom?"

I looked him straight in the eye.

"No."

"I found the truth."

Brooks nodded toward his officers.

"Richard Hale, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, fraud, and witness intimidation."

Richard laughed.

Until the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

Across the ballroom, another pair of officers escorted Penelope inside.

She was alive.

Tired.

Terrified.

The moment our eyes met, she burst into tears.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered.

"I wanted to tell you... but they would have killed us."

Moments later, another door opened.

Maverick walked in, still wearing his tuxedo.

The room fell completely silent.

He crossed the ballroom until he stood in front of me.

"I know I ruined our wedding."

"I'll spend the rest of my life earning your forgiveness."

For several long seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I reached for his hand.

Not because everything had been fixed.

But because he had disappeared to save my life, not to betray my heart.

Six months later, we stood in a small lakeside chapel with only our closest family and friends beside us.

No grand ballroom.

No three hundred guests.

No secrets.

When the officiant asked if anyone objected, only birds answered.

This time, Maverick didn't disappear.

He smiled through tears.

"I do."

May you like

"So do I."

And for the first time, the future felt safer than the past.
