CHAPTER 11 — My Mother Finally Stopped Pretending

Linda Bennett held the gun with both hands.

Her grip was unsteady.

But the barrel remained pointed at my chest.

“You always make everything difficult,” she said.

Her voice was no longer soft.

No tears.

No fragile mother performance.

Just hatred.

“Where’s the file?”

She laughed.

“You still think this is about paperwork?”

“What is it about?”

“You.”

The word came out like poison.

“You arrived, and suddenly Richard cared about nothing else.”

I stared at her.

“He stole me.”

“We saved you.”

“You told Sarah I was dead.”

“She was weak.”

“She was injured.”

“She would have wasted everything.”

Linda stepped closer.

“Your grandfather’s estate needed responsible people.”

“You mean thieves.”

Her finger tightened near the trigger.

“You have no idea what we sacrificed.”

“I know exactly what I sacrificed.”

My cheek still carried a fading bruise.

“I sacrificed twenty-one years.”

Her mouth twisted.

“You were never grateful.”

“For what? The lies? The bruises? The money you stole?”

“I gave you a family!”

“You gave me a prison.”

Something moved behind a broken reception desk.

Linda turned sharply.

Ethan rose with his phone recording.

“Put the gun down, Mom.”

Her face crumpled.

“You followed her?”

“I knew she wouldn’t come alone.”

Technically, I had.

Ethan had ignored me and followed anyway.

Linda swung the gun toward him.

That hesitation saved us.

I knocked her arm upward.

The gun fired.

The shot shattered a ceiling light.

Darkness swallowed the hallway.

Ethan tackled her.

I kicked the gun away.

Daniel and two officers rushed through a side entrance.

They had tracked Ethan’s phone.

Linda screamed as they handcuffed her.

“She ruined everything!”

“No,” Ethan said, breathing hard. “You did.”

Daniel found the red folder inside Linda’s bag.

The original guardianship agreement was there.

So was something else.

A handwritten letter from Richard to Linda.

If Sarah wakes, the child must never know. Grace is the key to controlling the estate.

Below it was a final sentence.

Once the money is secure, we can get rid of the mother permanently.

May you like

Sarah had not merely been declared dead.

Richard had planned to make it true.
