Chapter 3 – The House That Was Never Theirs

Three months later, the courtroom was nearly as silent as that Christmas dinner.
Except this time...
No one stood behind my father.
Evidence doesn't care about family traditions.
It only tells the truth.
The judge reviewed years of bank records, forged signatures, hidden correspondence, and witness testimony from employees at the law firm.
Then came the decision.
"The court finds that Ms. Leah Collins is the sole lawful beneficiary of the Samuel Collins Family Trust."
My father closed his eyes.
Chelsea burst into tears.
The judge continued.
"All assets improperly transferred shall be returned immediately."
Millions of dollars.
Investment properties.
The family home.
Even the cabin Grandpa built with his own hands.
Everything.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.
"Mrs. Collins, do you hate your father?"
I looked at Maisie, who held my hand with complete confidence.
Then I answered.
"I don't hate him."
"I just refuse to let my daughter grow up believing love has to be earned."
Behind us, my father walked past without saying a word.
He looked twenty years older.

For the first time in his life...
No one followed him.
