Chapter 11 - TREVOR'S LAST GAME

Trevor chose a hotel.

Room 1908.

Sadie entered carrying a small bag.

Trevor was waiting.

"You look different."

Sadie placed the bag down.

"You said that at the mall."

"No."

Trevor stared at her.

"I mean different from when we were together."

"I am."

"Because of him?"

"Because I left you."

His smile tightened.

"Still mouthy."

Sadie sat.

"Where's the evidence?"

"Where's my money?"

She opened the bag.

Documents.

Trevor picked them up.

"Trust authorization?"

"Signatures release the assets after the marriage issue is resolved."

Trevor smiled.

"You always were smarter than people thought."

"Not smart enough to recognize you."

His smile disappeared.

Sadie leaned back.

"Evidence."

Trevor opened his laptop.

An audio file.

Sadie's father.

Daniel's voice.

Then Grant.

They were arguing.

Daniel accused Grant of stealing.

Grant threatened him.

The recording ended.

Sadie's eyes filled with tears.

"My father's voice."

Trevor watched her.

"You never heard it before?"

"No."

For one second, Trevor almost looked human.

Then greed returned.

"There's more."

"What?"

"A second recording."

Sadie looked up.

"Where?"

Trevor smiled.

"Safe."

"Play it."

"Money first."

Sadie slid the documents toward him.

Trevor signed.

Then he removed a small recorder from beneath the mattress.

"Old-school insurance."

He pressed play.

Grant's voice filled the room.

Daniel should've kept his mouth shut.

Another man's voice asked what happened.

Grant laughed.

Brakes fail every day.

Sadie's blood turned cold.

That was it.

Proof.

Trevor stopped the recording.

"Happy?"

"No."

Sadie looked at him.

"But finished."

Trevor frowned.

"What?"

The hotel door opened.

Federal agents entered.

Trevor jumped up.

"You bitch!"

He lunged.

Sadie stepped aside.

Agents slammed him onto the carpet.

Trevor screamed her name.

Sadie watched calmly.

"YOU SET ME UP!"

She crouched near him.

"No, Trevor."

She looked into the face that had haunted her for years.

"You kept confusing kindness with stupidity."

The recorder was bagged as evidence.

Trevor laughed from the floor.

"You think this ends with me?"

Sadie stopped.

"What does that mean?"

"Grant has Roman's mother."

Her face changed.

Trevor smiled.

"You were so busy catching me."

"He took her an hour ago."

Sadie turned toward the agents.

Roman's phone rang.

Then Sadie's.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Grant's voice came through.

"Bring me Daniel's ledger."

Sadie's heart hammered.

"Let Eleanor go."

"Midnight."

"Where?"

Grant laughed.

"The place where your father died."

The line went dead.

Sadie looked at Roman.

This time, the Ghost wasn't calm.
