CHAPTER 1 â THE CHILD THEY TOOK AWAY

Clara ran through the hospital corridor barefoot.
The cold floor beneath her feet didnât matter.
The pain in her body didnât matter.
The only thing she could feel was the desperate heartbeat of a mother who had been told to stop loving a child who might still be alive.
Behind her, Leo followed.
His small footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.
âMom, waitâŠâ
But Clara couldnât stop.
For twenty-four hours, everyone had told her the same thing.
Her daughter was gone.
A tragic complication.
A medical mistake.
A loss nobody could explain.
But now her eight-year-old son had looked her in the eyes and told her something impossible.
âSheâs alive.â
They reached the back loading area of the hospital.
The place was dark.
Cold.
Forgotten.
Exactly the kind of place nobody wanted families to see.
Leo pointed toward the blue dumpster.
Clara froze.
âNoâŠâ
Her voice trembled.
âNo, LeoâŠâ
She slowly opened the lid.
For one terrifying second, there was only silence.
Thenâ
A tiny sound.
A weak cry.
Claraâs entire body collapsed.
Inside was a small newborn wrapped in a white hospital blanket.
Her daughter.
Alive.
Clara reached down with shaking hands.
âMy babyâŠâ
She lifted her daughter into her arms and held her against her chest.
The child was cold.
But breathing.
Leo stood beside her, tears finally filling his eyes.
âI told you, Mom.â
Clara looked at her son.
And for the first time that night, she realized something even more terrifying.
May you like
Someone had tried to make her believe her daughter was dead.
Someone had wanted this baby gone.
