CHAPTER 1 — The Night Santiago Rivas Lost Everything

The mansion fell silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The terrifying kind.

The kind that came when everyone in the room suddenly realized the balance of power had changed.

Santiago Rivas stood frozen in the middle of the marble hall.

His expensive watch still reflected the golden light from the chandelier.

His hand, which moments earlier had been raised against me, slowly lowered.

For the first time in years…

He looked afraid.

Because standing in front of him was not the powerless wife he thought he owned.

It was Ricardo Salazar.

My father.

The man whose name appeared on the front pages of every major business newspaper in Mexico.

The founder of Grupo Salazar.

A man whose decisions could move entire industries.

A man Santiago had spent years trying to impress.

And now…

That same man was standing inside his home.

Not as a business partner.

Not as an investor.

But as the father of the woman Santiago had tried to destroy.

“Ricardo…” Santiago whispered.

The confidence disappeared from his voice.

My father looked at him coldly.

“I believe you know my daughter.”

Santiago swallowed.

“Your daughter?”

Behind him, Beatriz’s wine glass slipped slightly in her hand.

The color disappeared from her face.

Because she finally understood.

The woman they had called worthless…

The woman they had tried to erase…

Was the one person they could never control.

I stepped closer to my father.

For the first time in two years, I didn’t feel alone.

“Dad…”

My voice cracked.

Ricardo immediately turned toward me.

And the expression on his face changed.

The powerful businessman disappeared.

For a moment, he was only my father.

A father who saw his pregnant daughter standing barefoot on a cold marble floor.

A daughter who had hidden her pain because she didn’t want to disappoint him.

His eyes filled with anger.

Not the loud kind.

The dangerous kind.

“Valeria,” he whispered.

“What did he do to you?”

I looked down.

Because saying the truth out loud made it real.

“I was scared you would think I failed.”

My father’s expression broke.

“You thought I would care about money more than you?”

A tear fell down my cheek.

“I wanted someone to love me for me.”

Ricardo stepped forward and gently placed his hand on my shoulder.

“You never needed to prove your worth, mi hija.”

Then he looked at Santiago.

“You were given a chance to love my daughter.”

His voice became colder.

“But you chose to hurt her.”

Santiago immediately tried to recover.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

My father laughed quietly.

A sound with no humor.

“A misunderstanding?”

He turned toward one of the attorneys.

“Play the recording.”

The lawyer opened a tablet.

The room filled with Santiago’s own voice.

“You will disappear quietly.”

“You have nothing.”

“I own everything.”

And finally…

“If you don’t sign those papers tomorrow, your baby will grow up without a mother.”

Santiago’s face turned pale.

Beatriz stepped backward.

“No…”

She whispered.

“No, this wasn’t supposed to happen.”

My father looked at her.

“You planned it.”

The lawyer placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of the fake psychiatric documents.

Insurance policies.

Legal arrangements.

Every piece of evidence.

Every secret.

Everything they had hidden.

“You attempted to imprison my daughter, steal custody of her child, and manipulate legal documents.”

The lawyer adjusted his glasses.

“The authorities will be very interested in this.”

Santiago suddenly changed.

The arrogance vanished.

The anger returned.

“You think you can destroy me?”

He pointed at my father.

“I built this empire!”

My father looked at him calmly.

“No.”

He walked closer.

“You built a house of lies.”

A pause.

“And tonight…”

“I am simply opening the doors.”

Three days later…

Every major news outlet in Mexico reported the same story.

RIVAS CORPORATION FACES INVESTIGATION AFTER FAMILY SCANDAL

Investors withdrew.

Partners disappeared.

The charity organizations that once praised Santiago began distancing themselves.

The perfect businessman image collapsed.

But Santiago still had one weapon.

His pride.

And he wasn’t finished.

Not yet.

Because men like Santiago Rivas never accepted losing.

They looked for someone else to blame.

And this time…

He blamed me.
