Chapter 1 - CUT THE CHAIN

The chain snapped at 4:17 p.m.

But the first thing Ethan Cole saw was not the broken steel.

It was the clear medical tube hanging from his nine-year-old daughter’s arm.

“Emmie.”

His voice came out rough.

The little girl was sitting against the porch post with her knees pulled toward her chest. A heavy chain ran around the wooden column and across her waist. Her shoulders sagged. Her face was pale beneath strands of damp brown hair.

Her eyes opened halfway.

“Dad?”

That one word almost destroyed him.

Ethan dropped beside the brass padlock.

“I'm here.”

He grabbed the red-handled bolt cutters he had carried from his truck.

“I'm getting you out.”

Behind him, the front door slammed open.

Vivian Mercer stepped onto the porch.

“What do you think you're doing?”

Ethan didn't look at her.

He locked the cutter jaws around a chain link.

Vivian marched closer.

“I said stop.”

Ethan squeezed.

Metal groaned.

Emmie flinched.

“Dad…”

“I know, sweetheart.”

His arms shook from anger.

“Give me one second.”

Vivian pointed at him.

“You have no right to come onto my property and start destroying things.”

Ethan finally looked up.

His eyes were cold.

“My daughter is chained to your porch.”

“She was out of control.”

“She is nine.”

“She tried to leave.”

Ethan stared at her.

For half a second, he genuinely couldn't believe what he had heard.

Then he squeezed harder.

SNAP.

The link broke.

The chain dropped loose across the porch boards.

Emmie gave a tiny gasp as the pressure disappeared.

Ethan tossed the cutters aside, slipped one arm under her knees, the other behind her back, and lifted her.

She weighed almost nothing.

That frightened him even more.

Emmie pressed her face against his chest.

“You came.”

“I'll always come.”

Vivian stepped into his path.

“You are not taking her anywhere.”

Ethan kept walking.

“Move.”

“She is under my supervision until six.”

“You lost that privilege when you put a chain around her.”

“You don't know what happened.”

“I know enough.”

Vivian grabbed his sleeve.

Ethan stopped.

“Let go.”

“No.”

“Vivian.”

“You think you can storm in here, embarrass me, damage my property, and take her?”

Emmie trembled in his arms.

“Dad…”

Vivian raised her voice.

“She needs discipline! Your daughter lies, steals, manipulates people—”

Ethan's restraint finally broke.

He shifted Emmie securely against one shoulder.

Then his open hand struck Vivian across the cheek.

A single sharp slap.

Vivian stumbled sideways.

Silence.

Even Ethan looked shocked by what he had done.

Then something slid from Vivian's clipboard.

A white handwritten card.

It landed at Ethan's feet.

He almost ignored it.

Almost.

But Emmie saw it.

Her fingers suddenly tightened around his shirt.

“Dad.”

Ethan looked down.

On the card, written in black marker, were six words.

**NEXT DOSE — 4:30 P.M.

DO NOT MISS.**

Ethan checked his watch.

4:18.

Then he looked at the medical tubing still attached to Emmie's arm.

His stomach dropped.

“What dose?”

Vivian's face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

Ethan slowly raised his eyes.

“What did you give my daughter?”

Vivian backed toward the door.

May you like

And that was when Ethan realized she was trying to run.
