Chapter 3 — The Secret Robert Was Hiding

The night before Maya’s surgery, I stayed beside her hospital bed.
She finally slept.
But I couldn’t.
My mind kept replaying every moment.
Every warning sign.
Every time I begged Robert to listen.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
“You need to know the truth about Robert.”
I stared at the screen.
At first, I thought it was spam.
Then another message appeared.
“He didn’t ignore Maya because he didn’t believe her.”
My stomach tightened.
“He ignored her because he was afraid of what doctors would discover.”
I sat up.
My heart started racing.
Who was this?
I typed:
Who are you?
A reply came instantly.
“Someone who knows what Robert did three years ago.”
I looked across the room.
Maya was sleeping peacefully.
And suddenly…
I wasn’t just afraid for my daughter.
I was afraid of my husband.
The next morning, while Maya was in surgery preparation, I confronted Robert.
“What happened three years ago?”
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“What are you talking about?”
“Don’t lie to me.”
He looked away.
And that told me everything.
“Emily…”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You watched our daughter suffer. You refused treatment. Why?”
Robert sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
He didn’t answer.
So I waited.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I’ve seen this before.”
I froze.
“What?”
“My sister died from a tumor.”
Silence.
“She was sixteen.”
I stared at him.
“So you knew?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“I knew something could be wrong.”
The anger inside me exploded.
“You knew?”
I stepped back.
“You knew our daughter was showing the same symptoms?”
“I thought I was protecting her.”
“Protecting her?”
My voice broke.
“You almost destroyed her.”
Hours later, the surgeon came out.
“Maya is stable.”
I nearly collapsed.
The tumor had been removed.
But the next question remained.
Was it cancer?
The doctor held the report.
May you like
“We’ll know soon.”
Those words haunted me.
