Chapter 2: The Secret Buried Beneath My Family

We didn't return to the church.

Not immediately.

My mother took us to the old house where I grew up.

The same house where I had spent my childhood believing I knew everything about my family.

But now every memory felt different.

Every photograph on the wall felt like evidence of a lie.

My mother sat at the kitchen table.

Her hands were shaking.

“I should have told you years ago.”

I stood across from her.

“Why didn't you?”

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

She looked toward Ethan.

“Afraid of losing you.”

I almost laughed.

“You lost me the moment you chose secrets over the truth.”

Ethan sat quietly.

For the first time, I saw something beyond his confidence.

Pain.

Real pain.

“My father was named Michael Carter.”

Ethan began.

“He worked with your father.”

I looked at him.

“Your father?”

He nodded.

“The man you grew up calling Dad was Richard Hale.”

My mother's face changed.

She knew that name.

“Richard and Michael were business partners.”

Ethan continued.

“They built a company together. But Richard wanted complete control.”

My mother whispered:

“He betrayed Michael.”

Ethan nodded.

“He framed him. Destroyed his reputation. Then made sure no one could hear his side of the story.”

I sat down slowly.

“And my mother?”

Ethan looked at her.

“She knew the truth.”

My eyes moved toward her.

“You knew?”

She started crying.

“Yes.”

The answer broke something inside me.

“You knew my father was innocent?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

She covered her face.

“I was threatened.”

The room went silent.

“By who?”

My mother looked at Ethan.

“By Richard.”

I felt sick.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“He told me if I ever exposed him, he would take you away from me.”

I remembered my childhood.

The strange nights when my mother cried alone.

The years she avoided talking about my father.

The missing photographs.

The unanswered questions.

All because of one man's secret.

“But Ethan,” I said quietly.

“Why did you come into my life?”

His eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I wanted to protect you.”

I looked away.

“By pretending to love me?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Sarah, I did love you.”

I looked at him.

“Then why kiss my mother?”

He looked down.

“Because she was the only person who could tell you the truth.”

I froze.

“What?”

Ethan explained.

“For years, I searched for evidence against Richard. I found documents. Records. Proof that he destroyed both our families.”

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

Business documents.

And one picture that made my heart stop.

A younger version of my mother.

Standing beside a man I had never seen before.

Michael Carter.

My real father.

Behind the photo was a handwritten note.

"If anything happens to me, protect Sarah. She deserves the truth."

My hands shook.

My father had known.

He knew something would happen.

And he was right.

I looked at my mother.

“Why today?”

She cried softly.

“Because Richard was coming to the wedding.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He planned to announce that he was taking control of Ethan's company.”

Ethan nodded.

“And I knew if I waited longer, you would never know the truth.”

I looked at the wedding dress I was still wearing.

The dress I thought represented love.

But maybe today wasn't about losing a marriage.

Maybe today was about finding myself.

Then my phone rang.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

"If you want the truth about your father, come alone. I know what really happened the night he died."

My heart raced.

I showed them the message.

Ethan immediately stood.

“Don't go.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His expression changed.

“Because whoever sent that knows we found the evidence.”

My mother whispered:

“They know everything.”

And then another message arrived.

A photo.

A photo of me leaving the church.

Taken only minutes earlier.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew the truth was coming out.
