Chapter 2: The Woman Everyone Believed Was Perfect

The man on the phone introduced himself as Daniel.
He was my mother's former neighbor.
And what he told me changed everything I thought I knew about my family.
"Your mother has always been good at one thing."
"What?"
"Making people believe she is the victim."
I sat at the kitchen table, staring at Megan sleeping in the bedroom.
My wife was exhausted.
Broken.
But finally safe.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Daniel sighed.
"Because I saw what she did to Megan."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Tell me."
Daniel told me something I never expected.
Years ago, my mother had done the same thing to my father's second wife.
She controlled her.
Humiliated her.
Made everyone believe the woman was unstable.
Eventually, the woman left.
Everyone blamed her.
Everyone except Daniel.
Because he had seen the truth.
"Your mother doesn't hurt people physically first."
Daniel said.
"She destroys their confidence."
I closed my eyes.
Every word matched what happened to Megan.
She didn't just hurt my wife.
She tried to make her feel powerless.
I returned to the bedroom.
Megan was awake.
"Who was that?"
I sat beside her.
"Someone who knew the truth."
Her face changed.
"What truth?"
I held her hand.
"About my mother."
Megan looked scared.
"Jake, please be careful."
"Why?"
"Because your mother doesn't lose."
Those words stayed with me.
Because Megan was right.
My mother had spent her entire life controlling situations.
She wouldn't stop now.
Three days later, my mother showed up again.
But this time...
She wasn't alone.
She brought a lawyer.
"I want to protect my reputation."
She said.
I almost laughed.
"Your reputation?"
She ignored me.
The lawyer opened a folder.
Inside were documents.
False accusations.
Claims that Megan was mentally unstable.
Claims that I was being manipulated.
My mother's plan was simple.
She wanted everyone to believe she was protecting me.
And Megan was the threat.
But she made one mistake.
She underestimated my wife.
Megan slowly walked into the room.
Still weak.
Still recovering.
But standing.
She placed a small recording device on the table.
My mother froze.
"What is that?"
Megan looked at her.
"The truth."
My heart stopped.
She pressed play.
And my mother's own voice filled the room.
"You are lucky Jake still believes you."
"You should be grateful I haven't told him what kind of woman you really are."
"Nobody will believe you."
The room went silent.
The lawyer slowly closed the folder.
My motherâs face turned pale.

Because for the first time...
Her lies had nowhere to hide.
