Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY VACATION WAS A COVER

By midnight, I understood why Daniel had needed me to remain calm.

He had already built a version of me on paper.

Paranoid.

Confused.

Emotionally volatile.

Financially irresponsible.

The real Rachel Bennett could be standing perfectly still while the fictional Rachel Bennett screamed from documents I had never seen.

Maya read every page Sophie photographed.

Daniel had included examples.

Some were real events twisted beyond recognition.

One section described an argument we had about a missing credit card.

According to Daniel, I had become convinced someone was stealing from me.

He omitted the fact that his sister had accidentally used my card after borrowing my wallet.

Another described a night when I woke him because I heard someone downstairs.

According to Daniel, I had experienced an irrational belief that someone had entered the house.

He omitted the fact that our security company later confirmed a sensor malfunction.

Another described my concern that a vendor was overbilling Alder Row.

According to Daniel, I had become obsessively suspicious.

He omitted the fact that the vendor refunded sixty-three thousand dollars after an audit proved I was right.

Every moment where I had questioned something had been transformed into evidence that I questioned reality itself.

Maya closed the document.

“This took time.”

“I know.”

“He didn’t write this after getting caught.”

“I know.”

“He has been preparing it.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“For how long?”

I looked at the date.

Six weeks.

But the hidden cameras had been installed months earlier.

The fraudulent loan was eighteen months old.

Claire’s shell company was two years old.

Maybe the petition was only the final move.

Maybe the marriage had become a financial operation long before that.

At 7:15 the next morning, Maya obtained an emergency conference with a judge.

By 9:30, Daniel’s planned Monday petition had been flagged for immediate review.

By 10:05, his attorney knew we knew.

Daniel called twelve times.

I answered none of them.

At 10:17, Richard called.

I ignored him.

At 10:21, Claire sent a message.

Please let me explain.

I stared at those words.

Everyone wanted to explain after being caught.

Nobody had wanted to explain when I was still useful.

At 11:00, a car appeared outside the house.

Marcus checked the camera.

Daniel.

Richard.

Claire.

All three.

Maya sighed.

“Of course.”

Daniel rang the bell.

I didn’t move.

He rang again.

Then Richard started pounding.

“Rachel.”

I heard him through the door.

“We know you’re in there.”

Marcus stood nearby.

“Want them removed?”

“Not yet.”

I opened the intercom.

“Maya is here.”

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

“Good.”

“She’s my lawyer.”

His expression changed.

“I need five minutes.”

“No.”

“Rachel, you have photographs of confidential legal documents.”

“Sophie sent photographs of documents about me.”

“She had no right.”

I almost smiled.

“You installed cameras in my office.”

Daniel froze.

Richard turned toward him.

Claire’s face drained.

I watched them through the screen.

For three people who had supposedly done nothing wrong, they looked remarkably guilty.

Daniel recovered first.

“What camera?”

“The one recording you stealing my blue folder.”

No one spoke.

Maya whispered beside me.

“Beautiful.”

Richard stepped toward the door.

“Rachel, open this door.”

“No.”

“You’re making accusations you do not understand.”

“I understand your voice very clearly on the recording.”

Richard went still.

I continued.

“I also understand Camille asking what would happen if I refused to sign.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Daniel whispered something I couldn’t hear.

“And I understand you saying Daniel would have authority to answer for me.”

Richard’s face changed.

Not shame.

Anger.

He hated losing control.

“Those conversations were taken out of context.”

“Then give me the context.”

Silence.

“That’s what I thought.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Rachel, the guardianship petition was precautionary.”

I stared at him through the camera.

“Precautionary against what?”

“You have been under enormous stress.”

“I didn’t know I was.”

“You have.”

“Because you were cheating?”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

“Because your sister was taking money from my company?”

Claire flinched.

“That is not what happened.”

“Then what happened?”

Claire moved toward the camera.

“Rachel, the company was repaying family investments.”

I laughed.

“What family investments?”

“Dad put money into Daniel’s practice years ago.”

“Richard loaned Daniel eight hundred thousand dollars.”

Richard looked surprised.

I continued.

“I paid it back nine years ago.”

Claire went silent.

“I have the wire confirmation.”

Daniel glared at her.

She looked away.

The family story was already cracking.

They did not even know which lies the others had told.

“Let us inside.”

Daniel said.

“No.”

“I live there.”

“You did.”

His expression hardened.

“Do not do this in front of the children.”

“The children aren’t here.”

“They will be.”

That sentence bothered me.

“Why?”

“Sophie wants to talk to you.”

I looked at Maya.

She shook her head.

“Put Sophie on camera.”

Daniel did not move.

“Where is she?”

“With Camille.”

My blood turned cold.

“You left Sophie with your mistress?”

“She’s at Claire’s house.”

Claire looked surprised.

Only for a second.

I caught it.

“So Camille is at Claire’s?”

“Yes.”

Claire still looked wrong.

I opened Sophie’s text thread.

Are you at Aunt Claire’s?

No response.

I called.

Straight to voicemail.

I looked at Evan’s location.

Off.

Sophie’s location.

Off.

My chest tightened.

“Where are the children?”

Daniel’s face became impatient.

“I told you.”

“Put Sophie on the phone.”

“Rachel.”

“Now.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You have no legal authority over Daniel’s children.”

The cruelty was deliberate.

He knew exactly where to cut.

I had raised them for twelve years.

But legally, he was right.

I had never adopted them.

Daniel had always said it wasn’t necessary.

“We’re already a family.”

Now I understood another reason he had wanted it that way.

Daniel could remove me from their lives whenever it became convenient.

Maya touched my arm.

“Stay focused.”

I did.

“Tell Sophie to call me.”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“Stop involving her.”

“You involved her when you brought her to the airport with your girlfriend.”

“Camille is not the issue.”

“You’re right.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“She isn’t.”

I looked at Richard.

“The stolen documents are.”

Then Claire.

“The shell companies are.”

Then Daniel.

“The forged guarantee is.”

All three became still.

There it was.

The six-million-dollar loan.

The thing none of them expected me to uncover this quickly.

Claire stepped backward.

Richard stared at Daniel.

Daniel’s voice became dangerously soft.

“What guarantee?”

I smiled.

“The one Camille notarized while I was in London.”

Nobody spoke.

A car passed behind them.

Birds moved through the trees.

The whole world was strangely peaceful.

Then Daniel did something I had never seen him do.

He lost control.

He hit the door with the flat of his hand.

“Open the damn door.”

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

Maya grabbed her phone.

I remained where I was.

Daniel saw himself through the camera.

He realized exactly what he had just done.

His hand lowered.

I spoke softly.

“Tell me again how emotionally unstable I am.”

Richard grabbed Daniel’s shoulder.

“Enough.”

Daniel stepped away.

Claire began crying.

I felt nothing.

Not yet.

Maybe later.

“Rachel.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“The trip wasn’t what you think.”

I almost laughed.

“Please never say that sentence to me again.”

“No.”

She wiped her face.

“I mean it.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Claire.”

She ignored him.

“We weren’t going on vacation.”

Richard’s voice became hard.

“Stop talking.”

Claire looked at him.

“Dad, she already knows.”

“She knows nothing.”

“I know about Bennett Meridian.”

Claire’s face collapsed.

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel grabbed his father’s arm.

“Let’s go.”

Richard didn’t move.

I watched the power shift.

For years, I assumed Daniel was the strongest person in that family.

I was wrong.

Daniel was afraid of Richard.

Not emotionally.

Practically.

Richard had something over him.

“Why Grand Cayman?”

I asked.

Nobody answered.

“Why were all of you going to Grand Cayman?”

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel whispered.

“Don’t.”

That word was for his sister.

Not me.

Claire opened her eyes again.

“To sign documents.”

Daniel swore.

Richard turned toward her.

“Claire.”

“What documents?”

I asked.

Her mouth trembled.

“The restructuring agreement.”

Maya leaned closer to the intercom.

“What restructuring agreement?”

Claire stared at us through the camera.

“The one transferring control of Bennett Meridian before Monday.”

I felt a cold sensation move through me.

“Control to whom?”

Claire looked at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then finally at me.

“To Daniel.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t own Bennett Meridian.”

Claire’s face changed.

“No.”

“Then why would my signature matter?”

She started to answer.

Richard grabbed her arm.

“We’re leaving.”

Claire pulled free.

“Because Bennett Meridian doesn’t own what Daniel told you it owns.”

Maya and I exchanged a glance.

“What does it own?”

Claire laughed once.

The sound was almost hysterical.

“Nothing.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“It’s a shell.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t.”

She looked directly at me.

“The six million wasn’t borrowed to fund Bennett Meridian.”

“Then where did it go?”

Claire swallowed.

“Into Daniel’s hospital project.”

I frowned.

“The research wing?”

“No.”

“His private institute?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

She looked at Daniel.

He seemed genuinely afraid now.

“The money was used to buy medical practices.”

I stared at her.

“Whose?”

“Fourteen of them.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible with six million.”

Claire nodded.

“It was only the down payment.”

“Down payment for what?”

“A seventy-eight-million-dollar acquisition.”

The number made the air leave my lungs.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at the driveway.

“What did you guarantee?”

I asked.

Claire whispered the answer.

“Rachel.”

Daniel said her name like a warning.

She ignored him.

“Your building.”

My stomach dropped.

“Only Property Four?”

“No.”

“What else?”

Claire began crying again.

“All of Alder Row.”

I couldn’t speak.

Alder Row was not one building.

It was a portfolio.

Commercial property.

Investment partnerships.

Three wellness centers.

Two apartment developments.

Land my mother had left me.

Assets I had built over twenty years.

Worth more than forty million dollars.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I was.”

Maya stepped forward.

“What document could possibly encumber all of Alder Row without Rachel knowing?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“A master guaranty.”

“I didn’t sign one.”

“I know.”

Maya’s voice became very quiet.

“Who did?”

Claire looked at Camille’s name inside the loan documents.

Then she said something that made even Richard close his eyes.

“Camille did.”

I stared.

“Camille signed my name?”

Claire nodded.

“She practiced it for months.”

Daniel walked away.

I could barely hear myself.

“Why?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because you were never supposed to challenge it.”

“Why not?”

May you like

Her answer came in a whisper.

“Because by Monday, Daniel expected a judge to believe you were no longer capable of challenging anything.”
