CHAPTER 1: THE AUDIT OF BETRAYAL

The ambulance arrived within minutes.
But those minutes felt like hours.
Daniel stood beside Elena’s coffin, refusing to move even an inch away from her.
His hand remained wrapped around hers.
The same hand he had held every night before leaving for Abu Dhabi.
The same hand he believed he would never touch again.
But now…
she was alive.
Barely.
The paramedics carefully lifted Elena from the coffin and placed her onto a stretcher.
One of them looked at Daniel with disbelief.
“Sir… whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What do you mean?”
The paramedic examined Elena’s medical condition.
“She wasn’t dead. Someone gave her a powerful sedative that slowed her body almost completely. It was designed to make her appear deceased.”
Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.
Someone had planned this.
Not an accident.
Not a mistake.
A murder attempt.
And the people standing in his living room knew.
As Elena was rushed away, Daniel turned back toward his family.
His mother was still standing near the coffin.
Still calm.
Still pretending.
“You should be ashamed,” she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
“Ashamed?”
“Yes. You come home after eight months and accuse your own family of hurting your wife?”
Her voice was emotional.
Almost convincing.
Almost.
But Daniel had spent years in the military learning one thing:
People could fake words.
They could fake tears.
But they couldn’t fake fear.
And his mother was afraid.
“I already know about the missing money,” Daniel said quietly.
The room froze.
Marcus stopped drinking.
His mother’s expression changed for half a second.
Just enough.
Daniel noticed.
“I know about the offshore accounts,” he continued.
“I know about the fake companies created under different names.”
Marcus placed his glass down.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“That’s exactly what a guilty person says when they realize the investigation is finished.”
Eight months earlier, before leaving for Abu Dhabi, Daniel had noticed strange financial movements inside the family company.
Millions disappearing.
Contracts being redirected.
Properties being transferred.
At first, he thought it was a mistake.
Then he discovered something worse.
Someone was slowly stealing everything from him.
His company.
His inheritance.
His father’s legacy.
And the person leading it…
was his own brother.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You think some little audit scares me?”
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
“No.”
He paused.
“But prison might.”
For the first time, Marcus lost control.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
Daniel walked toward him.
“No, Marcus.”
His voice became colder.
“You don’t understand what I’m doing.”
He pulled out his phone.
On the screen was a folder.
Thousands of documents.
Bank records.
Emails.
Hidden contracts.
Evidence.
“I didn’t investigate because I suspected you.”
Daniel looked at his brother.
“I investigated because I already knew.”
The silence inside the mansion became unbearable.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
It was the hospital.
He answered immediately.
A doctor’s voice came through.
“Mr. Whitmore… your wife is awake.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time that night…
he allowed himself to breathe.
But then the doctor added:
“There’s something else you need to know.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Before losing consciousness, your wife left a message.”
Daniel looked toward his mother and brother.
“What message?”
The doctor lowered his voice.
“She said… ‘Don’t trust anyone in your family.’”
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
Because now he knew.
The funeral was only the beginning.
