Chapter 3: Every Lie Has a Price

Inside the envelope was far more than a letter.
There were photographs.
Medical reports.
Bank statements.
Receipts.
Every document had been carefully organized by date.
My mother had quietly documented everything.
She had known someone might never believe an old woman's word against a younger, charming wife.
The bank records revealed that Vanessa had transferred nearly four hundred thousand dollars into accounts belonging to her younger brother.
She had forged my electronic signature using documents stolen from my office.
The receipts showed she had sold family jewelry inherited from my grandmother.
The medical records proved she had repeatedly canceled my mother's appointments while telling me over video calls that the doctors were satisfied with her recovery.
Then I found something even worse.
A printed email.
It had been accidentally forwarded to one of our shared cloud folders months earlier.
Vanessa had written to another man.
"Daniel will be overseas for at least another four months. Once his mother is gone, everything becomes much easier."
My hands began to shake.
This had never been about impatience.
It had never been about stress.
She had been waiting for my mother to die.
I immediately handed every document, together with the surveillance recordings, to Detective Marcus Hale.
Within forty-eight hours, police officers arrested Vanessa as she walked out of a luxury spa.
She smiled for the cameras.
Until the detective handed her a tablet.
He pressed play.
Her own voice echoed across the screen.
May you like
"No one will ever believe an old woman."
Her smile disappeared forever.
