Chapter 2 – The Lid Opens Twice

The police officer didn't begin with questions.

He began by looking.

At Lily's pale face.

At the dirt smeared across her pajamas.

At the fresh scrape marks on my arms from climbing into the dumpster.

Then he slowly turned toward the house where my parents still stood on the porch as if they were waiting for guests instead of an ambulance.

"What happened?" he asked quietly.

Before I could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

"It was all a misunderstanding," she said with practiced calm. "The little girl likes to hide. She climbed in there herself."

The officer didn't respond.

Instead, he looked at the commercial dumpster.

Its steel lid weighed nearly fifty pounds.

It took both of his hands to lift it.

He glanced back toward Lily.

"You're telling me a four-year-old opened this... climbed inside... and then closed it behind herself?"

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Meanwhile, paramedics placed an oxygen mask over Lily's face.

One of them frowned.

"Officer, come here."

He pointed toward Lily's wrist.

Dark red bruises circled both of her tiny arms.

Not from falling.

From being grabbed.

Marcus's face turned white.

I felt something inside me crack.

The officer immediately ordered another deputy to separate every adult in the house.

No one was allowed to speak to anyone else.

As detectives photographed the dumpster, one crime scene technician noticed something strange wedged beneath the garbage.

A pink birthday gift bag.

Inside it was Lily's stuffed rabbit...

And a folded family photo.

The picture had been torn straight through the middle.

My face...

Marcus's face...

Gone.

Only Lily remained.

Someone hadn't simply abandoned my daughter.

Someone had tried to erase us from the family.

Then another officer walked inside the house.

Seconds later he shouted,

"Detective—you need to see this."

Everyone followed him into the dining room.

The birthday banner still stretched across the wall.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMMA.

The cake sat untouched.

But beneath the guest list was another sheet of paper.

It wasn't meant for anyone else to find.

At the top were the words:

"Revised Seating Plan."

Every guest had a name.

Every chair had a place.

Lily's name had been crossed out in thick black marker.

Next to it someone had written only three words.

REMOVE BEFORE NOON.

The room fell silent.

Even the officers stopped moving.

This was no accident.

May you like

Someone had planned for Lily to disappear.

And someone in that house had expected nobody to ask why.
