Chapter 2: The Sister Who Wanted My Life

Two days later, Claire came to my house.
I knew she would.
People like Claire always came back.
Not because they were sorry.
Because they were afraid.
I watched through the window as she stood outside my door.
She looked different.
Not confident.
Not like the woman I saw under that blanket.
She looked scared.
I opened the door but didn't invite her inside.
"Emma..."
Her voice cracked.
"I know you hate me."
I said nothing.
"I made a terrible mistake."
A mistake.
That word.
The same word Ethan used.
I looked at my sister.
My little sister.
The girl I protected when we were children.
The girl I defended when our parents were angry.
The girl who cried in my arms after her first heartbreak.
And now she was standing in front of me because she had helped destroy my marriage.
"You didn't make one mistake, Claire."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You made thousands."
She looked down.
"I love him."
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed she still didn't understand.
"You love him?"
I laughed quietly.
"You loved watching my life become yours."
Her face changed.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you didn't want Ethan."
I stepped closer.
"You wanted everything that came with him."
She looked away.
And that was when I knew I was right.
The house.
The lifestyle.
The security.
The family.
She wanted my life.
Then she whispered:
"Ethan told me you were going to leave him."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"He said your marriage was already over. He said you were staying only because of your son."
My heart sank.
Because that was the lie.
The story they had created to justify what they did.
"He told you that?"
Claire nodded.
"He said he loved you, but you didn't love him anymore."
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Because Ethan had not only betrayed me.
He had rewritten our entire marriage.
He had made me the villain.
The next morning, I met Ethan.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I wanted answers.
He arrived looking exhausted.
"I know you're angry."
"No."
I looked at him.
"I'm not angry anymore."
That frightened him.
"Emma..."
"I'm done feeling pain for someone who planned to hurt me."
His face fell.
Then he finally admitted it.
The truth.
Claire wasn't the only one who wanted out.
He had been unhappy for years.
But instead of leaving…
Instead of being honest…
He stayed.
He used my love.
My trust.
My loyalty.
Until he was ready to replace me.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
I looked at him.
"But you did."
Silence.
Then I placed a folder on the table.
His eyes moved toward it.
"What is that?"
"Proof."
His face changed.
Inside were bank records.
Messages.
Photos.
Everything.
"I have enough evidence to prove financial fraud."
His confidence disappeared.

For the first time since I found them together…
Ethan looked afraid.
