CHAPTER 1 — The Money He Stole From Me

I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was thinking about Ethan and Claire.
That pain was already there.
The image of them together kept replaying in my mind, but something else bothered me more.
The banking app.
The numbers.
The missing money.
At midnight, I had opened our joint account expecting to see the same balance we had always carefully built together.
Instead, I saw something impossible.
Thousands of dollars had disappeared.
Not once.
Not accidentally.
Over and over again.
I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the screen until my eyes burned.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years of trusting him.
And suddenly, I realized I didn’t know my husband at all.
The next morning, Ethan came home.
He looked exhausted.
Like someone who had spent the entire night trying to create the perfect lie.
“Emma…”
I didn’t answer.
I was sitting at the kitchen table with my laptop open.
Between us was a printed copy of every bank transaction.
His face changed the moment he saw them.
“What is this?”
I looked up calmly.
“You tell me.”
He swallowed.
“Emma, I can explain.”
Everyone says that when they have no explanation.
“I found money missing from our account.”
“It wasn’t what you think.”
I almost smiled.
That sentence again.
The same sentence he used when I saw him with my sister.
“How much did you take, Ethan?”
His silence answered before his mouth did.
My hands tightened around the paper.
“How much?”
“About eighty thousand dollars.”
The room became completely silent.
My husband had not only betrayed me.
He had stolen from our family.
The money wasn’t just savings.
It was the emergency fund for our son.
The money we saved because our little boy had asthma attacks and we wanted to be prepared.
“You took our son’s safety,” I whispered.
Ethan looked away.
“I was going to put it back.”
“When?”
He didn’t answer.
“After you finished spending it?”
His eyes lifted.
And that was when I saw something I had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Emma…”
“Who was it for?”
He froze.
I already knew.
But I needed to hear him say it.
“Claire?”
His silence destroyed whatever was left.
I stood up slowly.
“My own sister.”
“Emma, please listen—”
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
But stronger than I expected.
“I listened for eight years.”
I grabbed my son’s jacket from the chair.
“I listened when you promised me forever.”
“I listened when you said family was everything.”
“I listened when you said Claire was like your sister.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“I just never imagined you meant it literally.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“I love you.”
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because they sounded empty.
“You don’t love me.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“You love what I gave you.”
The house fell silent.
Then my phone rang.
It was my father.
I answered.
His voice was tense.
“Emma… we need to talk.”
“About what?”
A pause.
May you like
Then he said something that made my blood freeze.
“It’s about Claire.”
