CHAPTER 13 — THE HEIR THEY CREATED

The teenage boy stepped out of the shadows.

The blue emergency lights washed over his face.

Nathan's breathing stopped.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

The same gray-green eyes.

The same dark hair.

The same determined jaw Nathan saw every morning in his own mirror.

But there was something different.

Something colder.

Something carefully trained.

The boy looked at Nathan without curiosity.

Without fear.

Without emotion.

As if he were studying a stranger.

Number One rested a hand lightly on the teenager's shoulder.

"Meet Adrian."

Nathan frowned.

"...Who?"

The old man smiled.

"The son Charles Harrington always wanted."

Silence settled over the corridor.

Officer Collins raised her weapon another inch.

"Don't move."

Neither Number One nor Adrian reacted.

Nathan looked at the teenager.

"Who are you?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"I asked myself that for fifteen years."

His voice was steady.

Controlled.

"I was told my father abandoned me."

He looked directly into Nathan's eyes.

"Then I was told he was finally worthy of meeting me."

Nathan slowly shook his head.

"I've never seen you before."

"I know."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"You weren't supposed to."

Noah instinctively moved closer to Nathan.

Daniel, weak but awake, had been wheeled into the hallway by two nurses after hearing the commotion.

The twins stared at Adrian.

Then at each other.

Daniel whispered,

"He was there."

Nathan turned.

"What?"

"The Blue Ward."

Daniel's face had turned pale.

"He watched us."

Adrian finally looked at Daniel.

"I wasn't allowed to speak to you."

Daniel's voice trembled.

"You watched when they punished Noah."

A flicker crossed Adrian's face.

The first real emotion Nathan had seen.

Regret.

"I couldn't stop them."

Number One slowly clapped.

"Excellent."

"Look at all of you."

"A father."

"Four children."

"A family reunion."

Nathan's voice hardened.

"You stole children."

"No."

The old man corrected him almost politely.

"We built successors."

Officer Collins cut him off.

"You're under arrest."

The old man laughed softly.

"Arrest?"

He glanced around the corridor.

"Detective..."

"You still think this building belongs to the hospital."

At that exact moment, the overhead monitors lit up again.

Corporate records.

Bank transfers.

Hospital ownership documents.

One by one, they scrolled across every screen.

Nathan stepped closer.

The owner of St. Mary's Children's Hospital...

wasn't St. Mary's.

The property had been quietly transferred through shell companies over two decades.

The final owner appeared on the screen.

The Harrington Legacy Foundation.

Nathan closed his eyes.

"My father..."

Number One corrected him.

"No."

"Your father signed papers."

"I wrote them."

Officer Collins spoke into her radio again.

"We need federal support immediately."

Static.

Then...

a familiar voice.

"This is Captain Ruiz."

"We're outside."

"The exits are blocked."

"What blocked them?"

A long pause.

"Private security."

"Approximately forty men."

Officer Collins looked toward Nathan.

"They came prepared."

Nathan ignored the conversation.

His eyes remained fixed on Adrian.

"How old are you?"

"Sixteen."

"Who raised you?"

"The Foundation."

"Did they ever tell you your mother?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then quietly answered,

"No."

Nathan took one cautious step forward.

"I can't change sixteen years."

"But I can tell you one thing."

Adrian waited.

"I never stopped loving children I didn't know I had."

For the first time...

the teenager's composure cracked.

Only slightly.

But Nathan saw it.

So did Number One.

The old man's smile disappeared.

"Enough."

Two men in black suits emerged behind Adrian.

Neither carried a visible weapon.

Instead...

each held a slim silver case.

Number One nodded toward them.

"Show him."

One case opened.

Inside...

were dozens of DNA reports.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

All bearing the Harrington name.

Nathan grabbed the first file.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His hands began shaking.

Every document had been altered.

Birth dates.

Names.

Parentage.

Hospital records.

Nothing had been left untouched.

Officer Collins looked over his shoulder.

"This is an entire fabricated history."

Number One nodded.

"History belongs to whoever preserves the records."

Noah suddenly pointed toward the bottom of the stack.

"That folder."

Nathan pulled it free.

Unlike the others...

it was sealed in dark blue wax.

Across the front...

Charles Harrington's handwriting.

OPEN ONLY IF NATHAN REFUSES.

Nathan broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

His father's unmistakable signature covered the final page.

Nathan began reading aloud.

Nathan,

If this letter reaches you, then I failed.

I believed I could control the people I chose to build the Foundation.

I was wrong.

They stopped serving the Harrington family years ago.

They began serving themselves.

If you are reading this, trust none of the records.

Not even mine.

Nathan turned the page.

Another paragraph.

Victoria was never told the full truth.

Andrew Whitmore became loyal to Number One, not to me.

Protect the children.

End the Foundation.

Nathan looked up slowly.

Number One wasn't smiling anymore.

For the first time...

the old man looked genuinely irritated.

"So..."

he said quietly,

"Charles hid that from me."

Nathan folded the letter.

"No."

"He left it for me."

The hospital lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then every monitor in the corridor suddenly went black.

A deep mechanical click echoed through the building.

Officer Collins frowned.

"What was that?"

Before anyone could answer—

the hospital's public address system came alive.

A calm computerized voice announced:

"Manual override accepted."

"Founder authorization recognized."

Nathan looked around in confusion.

"Founder?"

The voice continued.

"Welcome, Charles Harrington."

A beat of silence followed.

Then the system corrected itself.

"Identity updated."

"Welcome... Nathan Harrington."

Every electronic lock in the hospital released at once.

Somewhere deep below the Blue Ward...

a massive steel door began to open for the first time in more than a decade.

May you like

And Number One whispered, almost to himself,

"...He gave you the final key."
