Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE IN ARTHUR’S SAFE

Victoria slammed the front door so hard that the crystal chandelier trembled.

No one spoke.

Arthur remained in the foyer, staring at the door long after his wife disappeared behind it.

Then he heard a quiet sob.

He turned.

Maya stood beside the staircase with twelve-year-old Elena and nine-year-old Lucas pressed close to her.

Elena’s cheek was red.

Lucas was holding his wrist.

Maya looked terrified.

But what disturbed Arthur most was the way the children kept glancing toward the door.

As if they expected Victoria to come back.

Arthur lowered himself until he was at Lucas’s eye level.

“Is your wrist hurt?”

Lucas quickly shook his head.

“No, sir.”

Arthur noticed the boy hiding it behind his back.

“Let me see.”

Lucas hesitated.

Maya whispered, “It’s okay.”

Slowly, the boy extended his arm.

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

There was a darkening mark around the wrist.

Arthur looked at Maya.

“How long has this been happening?”

Maya immediately looked away.

That answer told him enough.

“Maya.”

She swallowed.

“Please don’t fire me.”

“Fire you?”

Arthur stood.

“Why would I fire you?”

“Because Mrs. Victoria said you would.”

Arthur went still.

Maya continued carefully.

“She said if we ever told you what happened when you weren’t home, she would make sure my mother lost her apartment too.”

Arthur stared at her.

“What apartment?”

“The one owned by Ashford Residential.”

Arthur knew the name immediately.

Ashford Residential belonged to Victoria’s father, Charles Ashford.

Maya lowered her voice.

“My mother cleans one of their buildings.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

Victoria hadn’t simply frightened the children.

She had used her family’s money to keep them silent.

“How many times?”

Maya looked at Elena.

Elena stared at the floor.

“Mrs. Victoria gets angry when Mr. Arthur isn’t here.”

Arthur felt something cold settle inside him.

He had spent years negotiating hostile acquisitions.

He had faced lawsuits, boardroom betrayals, and men who smiled while trying to destroy him.

But nothing had prepared him for realizing that people inside his own home had been afraid to speak because of the woman he married.

“I want the truth.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

So she gave it to him.

Victoria had screamed at them.

Threatened them.

Taken money from Maya’s paycheck for imaginary mistakes.

Forced Elena and Lucas to remain silent whenever they visited their mother after school.

And whenever Maya threatened to leave, Victoria reminded her that Charles Ashford controlled the building where Maya’s mother lived.

Arthur listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he asked one question.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

Maya gave him a heartbreaking answer.

“Because she said you already knew.”

Arthur looked away.

For the first time that evening, his composure cracked.

Victoria had used his name.

His reputation.

His house.

She had convinced frightened people that Arthur approved.

“I didn’t know.”

Maya nodded.

“I know that now.”

Arthur walked toward his study.

“Where are you going?”

“To make sure she can never threaten you again.”

He entered the room and locked the door behind him.

Then he opened the wall safe.

Inside were passports.

Property documents.

Emergency cash.

And one thick brown envelope.

Arthur had received it three days earlier from his company’s internal auditor.

He had not opened it because the allegations seemed impossible.

Now they didn’t.

He placed the envelope on his desk.

Across the front were six words.

CONFIDENTIAL — ASHFORD FAMILY FINANCIAL REVIEW.

Arthur opened it.

Twenty minutes later, he stopped reading.

His face had gone completely still.

The report contained shell companies.

False invoices.

Missing investment funds.

And transfers totaling more than eighteen million dollars.

But the final page was what changed everything.

Arthur recognized one of the signatures.

Victoria Ashford Sterling.

His wife.

Arthur stared at it.

Then his phone rang.

Victoria.

He answered.

Her voice was cold.

“My father wants to see you tomorrow.”

Arthur looked at the documents.

“Good.”

Victoria paused.

“Good?”

Arthur closed the file.

May you like

“I’ve been wanting to see him too.”

And for the first time that night, Victoria became silent.
