Chapter 4 – Dinner Was Never the End

Three weeks later, the divorce hearing lasted less than forty minutes.

The judge reviewed the medical records.

The photographs.

The forged postnuptial agreement.

The financial evidence.

The witness testimony.

Then he looked directly at Preston.

"Marriage does not grant ownership."

"It certainly does not excuse violence."

The courtroom fell silent.

The divorce was granted immediately.

The fraudulent agreement was declared void.

Preston was ordered to pay damages for assault and legal fees.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps.

They shouted questions.

"Ms. Bennett!"

"Do you have anything to say about your ex-husband?"

I stopped walking.

Turned toward the cameras.

And smiled.

"I lost a husband after one breakfast."

"But I found my self-respect before dinner."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The next morning, the headline appeared across Chicago news sites:

PHARMACIST WALKS AWAY FROM ABUSIVE MARRIAGE—COURT EXPOSES FINANCIAL FRAUD AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Preston disappeared from public life.

Eleanor's social circle quietly vanished.

Morgan found her own apartment for the first time in her life.

Richard eventually wrote me a handwritten letter.

It contained no excuses.

Only one sentence.

"I should have stood up when you needed someone."

I never replied.

Some apologies arrive too late.

Months later, I reopened my pharmacy after a complete renovation, funded entirely by myself.

On opening day, my father stood beside me as customers filled the store.

He smiled.

"You know..."

"What?"

"I was proud of you long before you fought back."

I looked around the bright pharmacy.

At the patients.

The staff.

The future I had rebuilt with my own hands.

The bruise on my cheek had disappeared.

But the lesson never would.

The morning after my wedding, they believed they were teaching me my place.

Instead...

May you like

They accidentally reminded me exactly who I was.

And that was the one thing they could never take away.
