Chapter 3: Every Lie Falls Apart

The house that had once felt like a prison suddenly became a crime scene.

Forensic photographers documented every corner of the kitchen.

The burned stove.

The shattered skillet.

The drops of blood.

The hidden camera beneath the island.

Grant sat handcuffed at the dining table, still insisting everything had been an accident.

"It was discipline," he argued.

"I never meant to hurt her."

Detective Ruiz played the recording.

The room filled with his own voice.

"Maybe now you'll learn not to ruin my dinner."

Then Elaine's voice.

"She needs to learn her place."

Finally Dennis.

"It's a private marital matter."

None of them spoke after that.

Their own words condemned them.

An investigator from the financial crimes division arrived shortly afterward.

He introduced himself before placing a thick folder on the table.

"We're also here regarding multiple reports of corporate fraud."

Grant blinked.

"What?"

The investigator opened the file.

"The accounting software your company uses was written by your wife."

Grant looked confused.

"So?"

"The software automatically created encrypted audit logs."

I met his eyes.

"I designed it that way."

Every deleted invoice.

Every fake subcontractor.

Every hidden transfer.

Every stolen tax dollar.

The software had preserved everything.

The investigator smiled faintly.

"You've unknowingly been recording evidence against yourself for years."

Grant's face turned ghost white.

Elaine whispered,

"Grant..."

He couldn't answer.

May you like

For the first time in eighteen months...

He looked afraid.
