Chapter 11 - WHEN THE PAST WALKED BACK IN

Three months later, Emily contacted me.

I hadn't heard from her in years.

Her message was simple.

I'm getting married.

I thought you should know because I've finally told my fiancé everything about us.

I stared at the screen.

Then I showed Clara.

Not because she demanded transparency.

Because secrecy had once destroyed us.

Clara read it.

"Are you going to answer?"

"I don't know."

"You can."

I looked at her.

"Does that bother you?"

"A little."

She smiled sadly.

"But being bothered isn't the same as being threatened."

I replied:

I hope you've found happiness.

Take care.

Then I showed Clara before sending it.

She shook her head.

"You don't need permission."

"I know."

"Then why show me?"

"Because I don't want hidden doors anymore."

Clara stared at me for a long moment.

Then she took my hand.

It was the first time she had done that since the hotel.

I nearly stopped breathing.

"You know what I remember most about that night?" she asked.

"What?"

"Not Emily."

I was surprised.

"The vacuum cord."

She laughed softly.

"Isn't that ridiculous?"

"No."

"I remember looking at your shoes."

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"They cost more than I had earned in two weeks."

I closed my eyes.

"I remember."

"I felt invisible."

"Clara."

"Let me finish."

I nodded.

"I wasn't only angry that you cheated."

She swallowed.

"I was angry because I had made myself smaller and smaller so your life could stay comfortable."

I looked at her.

"I stopped asking for things."

"I stopped complaining."

"I sold my ring."

"I worked nights."

"And somehow I still believed I was failing you."

My chest tightened.

"You weren't."

"I know that now."

She smiled faintly.

"That's the difference."

She wasn't telling me this because she needed reassurance.

She had already found it inside herself.

"I'll never ask you to become smaller again."

"I know."

Again.

Those words.

I know.

Clara leaned toward me.

This time, when she kissed me, it wasn't on the cheek.

It was slow.

Careful.

Uncertain.

When we separated, neither of us spoke.

Then Clara whispered, "I'm scared."

"So am I."

"What if we ruin it again?"

"Then we don't rush."

She nodded.

"No promises?"

"No promises."

"No moving in."

"Okay."

"No pretending the past disappeared."

"Never."

She looked at me.

"And if you lie to me once—"

"You walk."

She nodded.

"I walk."

I accepted the terms without negotiation.

Because love wasn't supposed to be a courtroom.

And trust wasn't supposed to require surrender.
