Chapter 3: Everything Falls Apart

The silence lasted only seconds.
Then another group entered.
Federal investigators.
Financial crime agents.
Uniformed officers carrying sealed evidence boxes.
One investigator unfolded a warrant.
"Adrian Vale."
"You are under investigation for securities fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy."
Another officer turned toward Vanessa.
"Vanessa Cross."
"You are being detained pending questioning regarding financial fraud and witness intimidation."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
"There must be some mistake."
The investigator calmly placed several photographs onto the marble table.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Luxury property purchases.
Fake consulting contracts.
Every document carried her signature.
Color drained from her face.
Adrian immediately pointed at her.
"She handled the accounts."
Vanessa spun toward him in disbelief.
"What?"
"You told me everything was legal!"
"You signed every transfer!"
"You promised no one would ever find out!"
Their voices rose louder with every accusation.
For years they had stood together while destroying everyone around them.
Now...
They were tearing each other apart.
One investigator approached my father.
"Mr. Hale."
"The encrypted recordings your security team recovered match every financial document."
Richard nodded once.
"Proceed."
The lead investigator walked toward me.
"Mrs. Vale."
"Your recordings documented repeated assaults over the last eight months."
"We also recovered evidence that your husband disabled the mansion's cameras tonight."
Adrian's face turned pale.
He suddenly understood.
The pendant.
The staircase.
The photographs.
Every insult.
Every beating.
Every crime.
I had remembered everything.
As officers placed handcuffs around his wrists, he looked directly at me.
"Evelyn..."
"I made mistakes."
"I loved you."
For the first time in years...
I felt absolutely nothing.
"No."
"You loved control."
May you like
"And tonight..."
"You lost it."
