Chapter 2: The Family Secret Behind The Lie

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Sophie slept peacefully after receiving stitches.

I sat beside her bed, holding her hand.

For the first time all night, I allowed myself to feel everything.

The anger.

The betrayal.

The pain.

Not from Preston.

From my parents.

Because Preston hurting my daughter was terrible.

But watching my own family protect him…

That was something I would never forget.

Around midnight, my father arrived.

Alone.

He stood outside the hospital room for several seconds before entering.

“Evelyn…”

I didn’t look at him.

“What do you want?”

He swallowed.

“I was wrong.”

Those three words surprised me.

Because my father had never apologized.

Not once.

Not when Preston broke my things as children.

Not when Preston blamed me for his mistakes.

Not when my parents always chose him.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive.

“You watched your granddaughter bleed.”

His face fell.

“I know.”

“No.”

I finally looked at him.

“You don’t know.”

“You watched.”

“You stood there.”

“And you did nothing.”

My father lowered his eyes.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Preston has done this before.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

He sat down slowly.

“Years ago, he framed someone at his company.”

“A young employee.”

“He accused him of stealing money.”

I felt cold.

“What happened?”

My father looked ashamed.

“The man lost everything.”

“He went to prison.”

“But later…”

“He discovered Preston had manipulated the evidence.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you expose him?”

My father’s silence answered before his words did.

“Because he was my son.”

The pain of that sentence was worse than any insult.

My family had spent thirty years protecting a person who destroyed everyone around him.

Then my father handed me an envelope.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Company reports.

Emails.

Evidence.

“After tonight, I knew I couldn’t protect him anymore.”

I opened the files.

And I saw the truth.

Preston’s entire empire was built on lies.

Fraud.

Manipulation.

Destroyed lives.

He wasn’t just a cruel brother.

He was a criminal.

But there was one final document.

A transfer agreement.

My name was on it.

I looked up.

“What is this?”

My father sighed.

“Your grandfather left you controlling shares in the family company.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Preston always believed he inherited everything.”

“But your grandfather trusted you.”

“He knew Preston would destroy the company.”

I stared at the papers.

All my life…

I thought I was the forgotten daughter.

The unwanted one.

The person nobody chose.

But my grandfather had seen the truth before anyone else.

He knew.

He knew Preston was dangerous.

And he prepared a way to stop him.

I looked at Sophie sleeping peacefully.

Then I closed the folder.

“This ends now.”
