Chapter 3 – The Family Finally Chose a Side

"You can't arrest me!"
Preston backed away so quickly he nearly stumbled over the sweetheart table.
"It was just a joke!"
"A joke?" the officer repeated.
"You planted evidence on an eight-year-old child."
"You assaulted her with a solid oak board."
"And you attempted to file a false police report."
The ballroom fell into stunned silence as handcuffs clicked around Preston's wrists.
His new bride burst into tears.
"This wasn't supposed to happen..."
She looked toward my parents.
"Do something!"
But neither of them moved.
For the first time in their lives...
They had no power to protect him.
The guests who had applauded Preston only an hour earlier now pulled out their phones.
Some recorded.
Others quietly walked away from the man they had once admired.
One elderly woman approached me with tears in her eyes.
"I judged your daughter."
"I'm so sorry."
Others followed.
One after another.
Apologies.
Regret.
Shame.
Not because I needed their forgiveness.
But because the truth had finally become impossible to ignore.
Then the hotel manager approached.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"We have one more recording you should see."
It showed the hallway outside the ballroom before the ceremony.
Preston stood with his parents.
My mother whispered something.
My father nodded.
Preston smiled.
Then my mother handed him Sophie's denim jacket.
She had taken it while pretending to help the flower girl get ready.
The silence that followed was even heavier than before.
They had all known.
May you like
They hadn't covered for him.
They had helped him.
