Chapter 2: The Camera Never Blinked

The paramedics burst through the ballroom doors just as the first police officers arrived.

For the first time that evening, people moved.

Not to help Sophie.

To get out of the way.

Evelyn refused to let anyone else carry her daughter. Blood still seeped through the white ribbon around Sophie's neck as the little girl clung to her mother's dress.

"I'm scared, Mommy..."

"I know, sweetheart. I'm right here."

As the ambulance doors closed, Preston called after them.

"You can't run from the truth!"

Evelyn didn't answer.

She simply looked at him one last time.

"You'll wish I'd left."

Three hours later.

Chicago Children's Hospital.

The emergency physician finished stitching the wound—twelve stitches across Sophie's scalp.

"Another inch lower," the doctor said quietly, "and she could have suffered permanent brain damage."

The words hung in the room like smoke.

Sophie had finally fallen asleep.

Evelyn kissed her forehead before stepping into the hallway.

Detective Marcus Hale was waiting.

"We've reviewed the statements," he said.

"Nearly everyone claims your daughter stole the phone."

"Nearly?"

Hale nodded.

"The hotel security manager refused to erase the surveillance files before we arrived."

Evelyn slowly smiled for the first time all night.

Back at the Whitmore Hotel...

The wedding reception had already resumed.

Music played again.

Champagne flowed.

Preston laughed with guests as though nothing had happened.

Until the ballroom doors opened.

Detective Hale walked inside with two uniformed officers.

"Mr. Preston Carter?"

Preston forced a smile.

"Officer, I'm actually in the middle of my wedding reception."

"You won't be for long."

Every conversation stopped.

The detective placed a laptop on the head table.

"I believe everyone here should watch this."

The ballroom projector flickered to life.

The surveillance video began.

A perfect overhead view.

Crystal clear.

There was Sophie.

Sitting beside her mother.

Never leaving her chair.

Never approaching the head table.

Never touching Preston's phone.

The room became painfully silent.

Then...

The camera caught Preston.

Looking over his shoulder.

Checking whether anyone was watching.

Walking calmly to Sophie's chair.

Sliding his own titanium iPhone into the pocket of her little denim jacket.

Then walking away smiling.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

His bride covered her mouth.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The detective paused the video.

"No edits."

"No cuts."

"No missing frames."

"Would anyone like to explain what we just watched?"

May you like

For the first time in his life...

Preston had nowhere left to hide.
