Chapter 9 - THE AGENT AT MY FATHER’S TABLE

I looked from the photograph to the agent.

Same face.

Same short gray hair.

Same watch.

Same small scar near his jaw.

There was no mistake.

My father had met him.

One week earlier.

I lowered my phone.

The agent turned toward me.

“Something wrong?”

I forced myself to stay calm.

“No.”

His name was Agent Christopher Dane.

I had seen it on his credentials.

He had been doing most of the talking.

The second agent introduced herself as Marissa Cole.

She seemed younger.

More cautious.

Dane looked at Martin again.

“We’ll continue this conversation downtown.”

Martin crossed his arms.

“Unless I’m detained, I’m not going anywhere.”

Dane smiled.

“You may want to reconsider.”

“Why?”

“Because the subpoena for your firm’s servers was signed this afternoon.”

Martin stopped breathing.

I watched him carefully.

This afternoon.

Before the wedding incident.

The FBI investigation had already been happening.

The framing of Sophie had collided with something much bigger.

Martin recovered quickly.

“I want counsel.”

“Of course.”

Dane turned toward me.

“Evelyn, we need five minutes.”

“Here?”

“Privately.”

I looked at Sophie’s door.

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“I’m not leaving my daughter.”

“We can speak nearby.”

“No.”

Dane studied me.

Then nodded.

“Fair enough.”

He handed me a business card.

“Call when you’re ready.”

He started to leave.

I spoke.

“Agent Dane.”

He stopped.

“When did you meet my father?”

His back stiffened.

Only slightly.

Then he turned.

Martin looked at me.

Agent Cole looked at Dane.

The hallway became very quiet.

Dane’s expression remained neutral.

“What makes you think I met your father?”

I held up the photograph.

His eyes flicked toward it.

Only for a second.

“Who sent you that?”

“Did you meet him?”

Dane looked at Martin.

Then at Agent Cole.

Then back at me.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Related to our investigation.”

“Was he a suspect?”

“I can’t discuss that.”

“Was he cooperating?”

“I can’t discuss that either.”

“Then why should I trust you?”

Dane sighed.

“You shouldn’t automatically trust anyone tonight.”

That answer surprised me.

He continued.

“You should document everything.”

“Already doing it.”

“Good.”

“And get independent counsel.”

“I already have one.”

“Even better.”

Martin scoffed.

“Who?”

I ignored him.

Dane looked toward Sophie’s room.

“What happened to your daughter tonight may be connected to financial crimes we’ve been investigating.”

“How?”

“We believe someone within Whitmore Holdings has been manipulating beneficiary records and asset transfers.”

“Preston?”

Dane said nothing.

“My father?”

Still nothing.

“Martin?”

Martin glared.

Dane spoke carefully.

“We have multiple persons of interest.”

“Was the midnight transfer part of it?”

His expression changed.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

“We knew a transaction was scheduled.”

“Why didn’t you stop it?”

“We were monitoring it.”

I felt sick.

“You were going to let it happen?”

“If the execution had proceeded, we might have identified additional participants.”

“You were using the transfer as a trap.”

“I wouldn’t characterize it that way.”

“I would.”

Dane looked uncomfortable.

“And my daughter got caught in the middle.”

“We did not know about the plan involving Sophie.”

“But you knew my family was doing something illegal.”

“We had suspicions.”

I took a step closer.

“You met my father.”

“Yes.”

“And he didn’t tell you?”

“No.”

“Or he did and you let it happen.”

Dane’s face hardened.

“No.”

I stared at him.

For once, I believed the answer.

Maybe not everything.

But that.

Agent Cole stepped forward.

“Evelyn.”

I looked at her.

“We should tell her.”

Dane’s jaw tightened.

“Not here.”

“She’s already involved.”

“Marissa.”

I caught the exchange.

“What should you tell me?”

Neither answered.

I stepped closer.

“What?”

Cole looked at Dane.

Then ignored him.

“Your father contacted us six weeks ago.”

My heart skipped.

“Why?”

“He believed Preston was stealing from the company.”

Martin went completely still.

I stared at her.

“What?”

Cole continued.

“Large transfers.”

“Fake vendors.”

“Offshore accounts.”

“Your father suspected your brother.”

I couldn’t process it.

“If Dad knew Preston was stealing, why was he giving him the company?”

Dane finally answered.

“Because he wasn’t.”

Silence.

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The midnight transfer was not what Preston believed it was.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“What was it?”

Dane looked toward Martin.

Martin said nothing.

Then Dane answered.

“It was designed to remove Preston.”

Everything stopped.

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

“My father and mother helped frame my daughter.”

“I don’t know what your mother did.”

“You have video.”

“Yes.”

“She knew.”

Dane nodded reluctantly.

“But your father?”

I thought of everything.

His coldness.

His accusation.

His demand that I leave.

His indifference while Sophie bled.

“You’re saying my father didn’t know?”

“I’m saying there may have been more than one plan happening tonight.”

My stomach dropped.

Two plans.

Preston’s plan to disqualify me and Sophie.

My father’s plan to remove Preston.

Both colliding at the same wedding.

“What was Dad supposed to sign?”

Dane looked at the clock.

“It’s almost midnight.”

I checked my phone.

11:47 p.m.

Thirteen minutes.

“Tell me.”

“The transfer would have placed Preston in temporary control.”

“That sounds like giving him the company.”

“For seventy-two hours.”

“Why?”

“To activate a forensic review clause.”

Rebecca had said nothing about that.

“What clause?”

Dane continued.

“Your grandfather’s trust contains a hidden audit trigger.”

“If a beneficiary assumes controlling authority while under active fraud investigation, the independent trustee can freeze all related accounts and compel a full forensic audit.”

I stared at him.

“My father was baiting Preston.”

“Yes.”

“And Helen Mercer knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my father treat Sophie like a criminal?”

Dane’s expression tightened.

“I can’t answer that.”

“Because you don’t know?”

“Yes.”

That was worse.

My father may not have planned the framing.

But when it happened...

He chose Preston anyway.

Maybe out of habit.

Maybe fear.

Maybe cruelty.

It didn’t matter.

He still chose.

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Evelyn, where are you?”

“Still at the hospital.”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“The independent trustee filed an emergency motion.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“For what?”

“To freeze the entire Whitmore trust.”

My breath caught.

“Because of Sophie?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

“The ballroom footage.”

“Which part?”

“All of it.”

I frowned.

“Ramirez said only eleven minutes survived.”

“Apparently that wasn’t true.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“The hotel’s off-site backup just came online.”

I looked at Agent Dane.

He heard.

His expression changed.

“What does it show?”

Rebecca took a breath.

“Preston.”

My grip tightened.

“Doing what?”

“Not planting the phone.”

“I know Daniel did that.”

“No.”

Rebecca’s voice became quieter.

“It shows Preston doing something after Sophie was hit.”

I remembered the chaos.

I had been holding her.

Everyone had been staring at us.

“What?”

“He walked behind the head table.”

“And?”

“He gave something to Martin.”

I looked at Martin.

His face changed.

Rebecca continued.

“A folder.”

My pulse quickened.

“What folder?”

“We don’t know.”

“But the camera zoom captured part of the label.”

“What did it say?”

Rebecca paused.

“Evelyn Whitmore.”

I felt cold.

“And beneath your name...”

Another pause.

“Emergency Incapacity Petition.”

I stared at Martin.

His eyes met mine.

He knew exactly what I had just learned.

I whispered.

“They were going to declare me incompetent.”

Martin looked away.

Rebecca continued.

“It gets worse.”

“How?”

“The petition says you became violent at the wedding.”

“What?”

“It says you attacked Preston.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“And?”

“It says Sophie’s injury occurred during your outburst.”

My entire body went cold.

They had planned to blame me.

Not just call me unstable.

Not just remove me.

They were going to claim I caused my own daughter’s injury.

Then Agent Dane’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed completely.

“What?”

Agent Cole looked at him.

Dane covered the phone.

“To all units.”

His voice sharpened.

“Lock down the Whitmore Hotel.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

He ended the call.

May you like

Then looked directly at me.

“Your father is missing.”
