Chapter 5 - THE PATRIARCH’S SECRET

Julian stared at his father’s face on the screen.
Vittorio Rossi had built an empire from three trucks and a warehouse.
At seventy-one, he remained the most feared man in the Rossi family.
Julian had spent his entire life seeking his approval.
Now Vittorio was standing in a photograph beside Elena’s unconscious body.
“Elena.”
She looked at the image.
Her face changed.
“I never saw him there.”
“You were unconscious.”
“I thought your mother and Luca were behind everything.”
“So did I.”
Julian called his father.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
COME HOME.
Julian stared at it.
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“I need answers.”
“That’s what they want.”
“I’m done being afraid of what they want.”
“This isn’t about fear.”
Elena sat upright.
“You don’t know what they’re capable of.”
Julian looked at her.
“Then tell me.”
She hesitated.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”
“What?”
“The clinic wasn’t the first time they threatened me.”
Julian waited.
“Two months before I disappeared, your father asked me to sign something.”
“What?”
“A postnuptial agreement.”
Julian frowned.
“We already had one.”
“This was different.”
“How?”
“It said I surrendered any claim our future children might have to Rossi Holdings.”
Julian’s expression hardened.
“You didn’t sign.”
“No.”
“What did my father say?”
“He told me I was making a mistake.”
“That sounds like him.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“Children can lose more than inheritances.”
Julian felt ice spread through him.
“He threatened our future children?”
“I didn’t know I was pregnant then.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“The same night.”
Julian searched his memory.
He remembered.
Elena had come into his study.
He had been on a conference call.
She waited nearly twenty minutes.
Then Isabella entered.
His mother said Elena was being dramatic again.
Julian had asked Elena if it could wait until morning.
Elena had walked away.
He had never asked again.
Julian sat down.
“I failed you.”
Elena looked at him.
“You were busy.”
“That isn’t an excuse.”
“No.”
“It isn’t.”
He accepted it.
“I should have listened.”
“Yes.”
“I should have noticed.”
“Yes.”
“I should have protected you.”
Elena’s expression softened.
“You weren’t the one who did this.”
“But I made it easy.”
She said nothing.
Julian’s phone buzzed.
Matteo.
“I found Monaco.”
Julian answered.
“What happened?”
“Your father met with the trustees eighteen months ago.”
“And?”
“He discovered the original succession clause.”
“The one involving my child.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he change it?”
“He couldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Your grandmother made it irrevocable.”
Julian almost smiled.
That sounded like Sofia Rossi.
“What else?”
“There’s a second clause.”
Julian’s smile vanished.
“What clause?”
“If there is evidence that the acting family patriarch interferes with a legitimate heir…”
Matteo paused.
“Control bypasses the patriarch entirely.”
“To whom?”
“The heir’s legal guardian.”
Julian looked at Elena.
His daughter’s legal guardian would be her mother.
“Elena.”
“Yes.”
“If your father is proven to have interfered with Sofia’s birthright, Elena could gain temporary control of the Rossi voting trust.”
Julian stared at his wife.
Suddenly everything became clearer.
Vittorio did not simply need Elena gone.
He needed Elena discredited.
Mentally unstable.
Unfit.
Powerless.
That was why the clinic records mattered.
That was why they threatened custody.
That was why she had been hidden rather than killed or divorced.
They needed the marriage intact until they controlled the succession.
Then they needed the baby erased from the equation.
Julian whispered,
“My father didn’t hide you because he hated you.”
Elena looked at him.
“He hid you because he was afraid of you.”
Julian ended the call.
He paced toward the window.
A black SUV sat across the street.
Another was parked near the service entrance.
They had arrived within minutes.
Julian looked closer.
“Elena.”
She joined him.
Her face drained.
“They found us.”
“No.”
Julian picked up his phone.
“I’m done running.”
He called Bellini.
“Lock the private elevator.”
“Mr. Rossi?”
“Now.”
Then hotel security.
Then Matteo.
“Get here.”
“How fast?”
“Immediately.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“And bring everything you recovered.”
Elena stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
“Making them come to me.”
“That’s insane.”
“No.”
He closed the curtains.
“For eight months, they controlled where you went.”
“Who you spoke to.”
“What you knew.”
“What I knew.”
“They controlled the story.”
Julian looked at her.
“Not anymore.”
A knock sounded.
Three slow knocks.
Elena froze.
Julian moved toward the door.
“Who is it?”
A familiar voice answered.
“Open the door, son.”
Vittorio.
Julian looked at Elena.
She backed away.
“Don’t.”
Another knock.
“Julian.”
His father sounded almost bored.
“We need to talk.”
Julian opened the door but left the security chain attached.
Vittorio stood outside.
No bodyguards.
No anger.
He wore a charcoal Brioni suit and carried his cane.
He looked exactly like the father Julian had known his entire life.
That somehow made it worse.
“What do you want?”
“To correct a mistake.”
Julian’s eyes hardened.
“Which one?”
Vittorio looked past him toward Elena.
“Her.”
Julian slammed the door.
Vittorio’s hand stopped it.
“Think carefully.”
“I have.”
“No.”
His father’s voice remained calm.
“You’re emotional.”
“You found your wife.”
“You learned about the child.”
“You think you understand what happened.”
“I have a photograph of you inside the clinic.”
Silence.
Vittorio’s face did not change.
“So?”
Julian almost admired the arrogance.
“You knew where Elena was.”
“Yes.”
The simple admission stunned him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For eight months?”
“Yes.”
Elena stared from across the room.
Julian tightened his grip on the door.
“You let me believe she abandoned me.”
“I needed you focused.”
“Focused?”
“On the company.”
Julian laughed once.
“You imprisoned my pregnant wife.”
“I protected this family.”
“From my unborn daughter?”
Vittorio’s expression hardened.
“From Elena.”
Julian stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because she found something she was never supposed to find.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
Vittorio looked at her.
“You really don’t remember?”
Elena went still.
Julian turned.
“Remember what?”
Vittorio smiled faintly.
“The clinic did better work than I expected.”
Julian’s blood ran cold.
“What did you do to her?”
“Nothing permanent.”
Elena’s hand moved to her temple.
A memory seemed to strike her.
She staggered.
Julian rushed to her.
“Elena?”
She stared at Vittorio.
“The basement.”
Vittorio’s smile disappeared.
Julian looked between them.
“What basement?”
Elena’s breathing quickened.
“Villa Rossi.”
“I went downstairs.”
“When?”
“The day I disappeared.”
Julian frowned.
“You told me Luca drove you from lunch.”
“He did.”
“But before that…”
She pressed both hands against her temples.
“I went looking for your mother.”
“I opened the wrong door.”
Vittorio stepped into the suite.
Julian immediately blocked him.
“Stay there.”
Elena continued.
“There were boxes.”
“Files.”
“Photographs.”
“Bank records.”
“And a safe.”
Her eyes widened.
“I saw a name.”
Julian waited.
“What name?”
Elena looked at Vittorio.
“Sofia Rossi.”
Julian frowned.
His grandmother.
Vittorio’s face turned stone cold.
Elena suddenly gasped.
“No.”
“What?”
She looked at Julian.
“Your grandmother didn’t leave you only the succession clause.”
“What did she leave?”
Elena whispered,
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
Vittorio finally lost his calm.
“That is enough.”
Julian turned toward him.
His father stepped forward.
“Give me Elena.”
Julian almost laughed.
“You’re insane.”
“Give her to me and this ends tonight.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what she uncovered.”
“Then tell me.”
Vittorio looked at his son.
For the first time, Julian saw fear in his father’s eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
And Julian understood that the pregnancy was only part of the secret.
Elena had found something bigger.
Something Vittorio Rossi had spent years hiding.
Vittorio lowered his voice.
“Your grandmother discovered that billions were stolen from Rossi Holdings.”
Julian stared at him.
“By whom?”
Vittorio did not answer.
Elena suddenly remembered.
Her eyes widened.
“Oh my God.”
Julian turned toward her.
“What?”
She looked at him.
“The accounts weren’t in your father’s name.”
Vittorio went pale.
Julian whispered,
“Whose name?”
Elena stared at the man in the doorway.
Then she said the name that changed everything.
May you like
“Luca.”
And somewhere downstairs, the hotel fire alarm began to scream.
