HE FOUND HIS MISSING WIFE WORKING AS A MAID—THEN A LOCKED NURSERY EXPOSED A THREE-YEAR NIGHTMARE
Alejandro Castillo kept the phone pressed to his ear.
"Freeze every account connected to Vivian Moretti," he ordered. "Personal. Corporate. Domestic. Offshore. Effective immediately."
At the top of the sweeping staircase, Vivian's confident smile disappeared.
"You can't be serious."
Alejandro ended the call without acknowledging her.
His gaze shifted to the woman kneeling beside the dark crimson stain spreading across the marble floor.
Elena.
His wife.
The woman he had spent three years searching for had been standing less than twenty feet away all along, wearing a plain gray maid's uniform tied with a faded white apron.
She looked painfully thinner.
Her fingers tightened around the cleaning cloth as though she expected someone to punish her for letting go of the phone.
Alejandro took one slow step toward her, then stopped, leaving several feet between them.
"Elena..."
She flinched.
The movement was barely noticeable.
It shattered him anyway.
Before she could answer, Vivian's voice turned soft and almost affectionate.
"Her name is Anna. She came here six months ago looking for work."
Elena lowered her head without saying a word.
Vivian smiled.
"Isn't that right, Anna?"
The entire mansion fell silent.
Alejandro slowly turned toward the head of security.
"Lock every exterior door."
The guards moved instantly.
The servants instinctively stepped back.
Alejandro looked at every face in the room.
"Think very carefully before you speak."
His voice became ice.
"The next person who threatens anyone in this house will be escorted out by security."
Vivian descended the final step with forced composure.
"You disappear overseas for months, come home, and suddenly I'm a criminal because one maid happens to resemble your missing wife?"
Alejandro ignored her completely.
His eyes never left Elena.
Her face was pale from exhaustion.
A faint bruise circled one wrist.
The way she clutched the rag made it obvious she had learned to expect punishment for the smallest mistake.
He whispered her name again.
"Elena."
She trembled.
Vivian stepped forward, desperate to regain control.
"Her name is Anna."
Alejandro finally looked up.
His voice remained calm.
"The first person who tells me the truth will not be punished."
He looked directly at every servant.
"No one will lose a job."
"No one will lose a home."
"No one's immigration sponsorship will be touched."
"Whatever Vivian threatened you with..."
"It ends today."
Rosa covered her mouth.
No one spoke.
Alejandro reached inside his wallet.
Behind several business cards rested a small photograph.
He held it up.
It showed Elena standing beside a lake on their second wedding anniversary.
Her blonde hair danced in the wind.
She was laughing at something just beyond the camera.
Alejandro's voice softened.
"When I gave you this picture..."
"You said I worked too much."
"You made me walk three miles just to earn breakfast."
"You ordered pancakes."
"And then complained mine looked better because they came with legal protection."
A tiny sound escaped Elena.
Her lips trembled.
"In every dream I've had for three years..."
"I imagined this moment."
"I always thought you'd run into my arms."
"I thought you'd smile."
"I thought you'd tell me everything was going to be okay."
Reality was nothing like the dream.
Elena collapsed against his chest.
Her entire body shook.
Her hands clung to the back of his jacket as though she feared someone would drag her away again.
"I knew you'd come home," she whispered through tears.
Alejandro gently held her.
"I kept repeating everything the investigators found."
Her breathing became uneven.
"You hired those investigators..."
She whispered.
Vivian remained silent.
Alejandro slowly turned toward her.
"Where were you keeping her?"
Elena raised a trembling hand and pointed toward the west wing.
"The old nursery."
Alejandro froze.
That section of the mansion had been sealed ever since his mother died.
Vivian had claimed a burst pipe had made it unsafe.
Alejandro looked at security.
"Open it."
Vivian immediately stepped forward.
"No!"
She blocked the hallway.
"The structure isn't safe."
The security team ignored her.
The entrance was protected by a digital lock that hadn't existed three years earlier.
Vivian refused to provide the code.
Without hesitation, the guards removed the control panel from the wall.
Minutes later...
The lock clicked open.
As the door slowly swung inward, Elena grabbed Alejandro's sleeve.
"Don't go in alone."
The hallway beyond was dark.
Dust covered the antique furniture.
Yet a narrow path through the center had been cleaned recently.
At the very end stood the old nursery.
A heavy steel lock had been installed outside the door.
Security forced it open.
Inside...
The room looked nothing like a nursery.
There was a narrow bed.
A tiny sink.
Several empty prescription bottles.
A surveillance camera mounted near the ceiling.
Every window had been sealed from the outside.
On the wall beside the bed, words had been carved into the plaster using the edge of a metal spoon.
I NEVER LEFT YOU.
Alejandro reached out and traced the carved letters with trembling fingers.
Behind him...
Elena finally broke down.
She sobbed uncontrollably.
Then Rosa pointed toward a child's wardrobe in the corner.
"There's something behind it."
The guards pushed the wardrobe aside.
Hidden behind it was a small steel safe.
Vivian suddenly spun around and ran.
She made it only three steps before two guards tackled her to the ground.
Alejandro stared at the safe.
"What's inside?"
Vivian struggled violently.
"Nothing that belongs to you."
Elena slowly stepped forward.
With shaking hands...
She entered a six-digit code.
The safe unlocked.
Inside were her passport.
Her wedding ring.
Several encrypted flash drives.
A black leather security ledger embossed with the seal of the Castillo Foundation.
Resting on top...
Was a sealed envelope.
May you like
Alejandro recognized the handwriting instantly.
It belonged to his late father.
