Chapter 2 — The Recording That Changed Everything

Marcus watched the footage over and over until dawn.
Each replay made his hands shake harder.
Lily knelt on the marble floor, tears slipping into the metal dog bowl while Cassandra stood above her as calmly as if she were giving instructions to a housekeeper.
"If you're hungry," Cassandra said softly, "eat where animals eat. That's all you're worth."
Lily whispered a trembling, "I'm sorry."
Marcus paused the video.
Then zoomed in.
His daughter's small shoulders weren't simply shaking from fear.
There were bruises.
Faint fingerprints marked the inside of her left arm.
His chest tightened.
For months he had blamed grief.
He had believed Lily was struggling because she missed her mother.
Instead, the nightmare had been sleeping under his own roof.
He called his family doctor before sunrise.
Within two hours, Lily was quietly examined while Cassandra believed Marcus had left for a business meeting.
The doctor documented everything.
Bruises in different stages of healing.
Signs of prolonged emotional abuse.
A child terrified of saying the word "Cassandra."
When the doctor gently asked who hurt her, Lily stared at the floor.
"If I tell..." she whispered, "...Daddy will leave me too."
Marcus broke down outside the examination room.
That single sentence hurt more than anything he had ever heard.
He swore to himself that his daughter would never feel abandoned again.
But he refused to confront Cassandra immediately.
She still believed she had won.
Marcus intended to let her believe that for just a little longer.
Because he wanted every second of evidence.
