CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

Within thirty minutes, police officers, detectives, and child protection investigators filled the mansion.

Victoria was escorted upstairs in handcuffs.

She never stopped insisting it was all a misunderstanding.

Then Detective Maria Collins unlocked a steel cabinet hidden behind the basement shelves.

Inside were dozens of folders.

Every file contained a child's name.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

Behavior charts.

Punishment schedules.

Nathan felt sick.

There weren't just three children.

There had been fourteen.

Some had stayed for weeks.

Others had disappeared after only a few days.

"What is this?" Nathan whispered.

The detective opened another folder.

At the top was the logo of the Harrington Foundation.

Victoria's charity.

The same organization celebrated worldwide for rescuing abandoned children.

Nathan's stomach dropped.

The foundation had become the perfect disguise.

Publicly, Victoria organized charity galas, accepted donations, and posed for magazine covers beside smiling children.

Privately, she selected vulnerable children from the system, isolated them, abused them, and falsified reports before quietly transferring them elsewhere.

One investigator approached Nathan carrying a tablet.

"Sir... there's something else."

He played security footage from six years earlier.

Nathan watched himself boarding a plane for another overseas business trip.

Minutes later...

Victoria led another frightened child into the basement.

She had been doing this for years.

Every time he traveled.

Every time he believed he was providing a better future for his family.

He had unknowingly financed a nightmare beneath his own home.

Nathan lowered his head.

The guilt was unbearable.
