Chapter 11 - After the Cameras Left

Charles Cross was charged.

Vanessa was arrested two days later for fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and planting stolen property.

Marco accepted a plea agreement related to the custody scheme and agreed to supervised contact only if Elena approved.

The story became national news.

Reporters camped outside the estate.

Elena hated every second.

“She’s the billionaire’s maid.”

“Her toddler exposed the fiancée.”

“Secret romance?”

That last headline made Elena slam her phone face-down.

Damian noticed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Fair.”

She looked at him.

“I need to leave.”

The words hit harder than he expected.

“What?”

“The estate.”

“Elena—”

“I can’t raise Mia inside a headline.”

“You don’t have to quit.”

“I do.”

He stood silent.

She continued.

“I spent four years being useful here.”

“Then Vanessa treated me like I was invisible.”

“Now everyone’s treating me like I’m important because you defended me.”

“I don’t want either.”

Damian understood.

That made it worse.

“What do you want?”

“My own place.”

“My daughter safe.”

“A job where nobody whispers when I walk past.”

He nodded.

“I can help.”

“No.”

His face tightened.

“Why?”

“Because if I let you fix everything, I’ll never know if I fixed anything myself.”

Damian looked away.

That evening, Elena packed.

Mia sat on a suitcase.

“Are we leaving Mr. Cross?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because this is his house.”

Mia frowned.

“He has too many rooms.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“That’s true.”

Damian walked them to the cottage.

Elena held out her keys.

He didn’t take them immediately.

“Four years.”

“I know.”

“You made this place work.”

“I was paid to.”

“You did more than that.”

Their fingers touched when he took the keys.

Neither moved.

Then Mia appeared between them.

She hugged Damian’s leg.

“Come to my new house.”

He crouched.

“If your mom invites me.”

Mia looked at Elena.

“Invite him.”

Elena almost smiled.

“We’ll see.”

Damian nodded.

It wasn’t what he wanted.

But it was honest.

Three weeks later, Elena started work managing a boutique hotel in Tarrytown.

She rented a two-bedroom apartment.

Mia got her own room.

Life became smaller.

Quieter.

Normal.

Until Elena opened her mailbox one Friday and found an envelope.

Inside was no letter.

Only the crumpled one-dollar bill.

And a note in Damian’s handwriting.

May you like

You forgot something valuable.
