Chapter 9 - THE ARREST

The police didn’t arrest us.
Vivian had lied about that too.
Robert’s name was still on the original storage lease.
We had legal access.
Vivian arrived anyway.
She stepped from her black SUV wearing a cream coat and fury.
“You.”
She pointed at me.
“You brought this into my family.”
I laughed.
“Your family was already on fire, Vivian. I just opened the door.”
Ethan stood between us.
“Stop.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand what she’s doing.”
“She proved Emmie is mine.”
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“That laboratory made mistakes.”
“No.”
“She’s turning you against me.”
“No, Mom.”
His voice changed.
“You did that yourself.”
Vivian stared at him.
Then saw the journal in my hand.
For the first time, she lost color.
“Give me that.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“No.”
She lunged.
Robert stepped between us.
Vivian froze.
Their eyes met.
Nearly forty years collapsed into one second.
“You should have stayed gone,” she whispered.
Robert’s voice was quiet.
“You should have told the truth.”
“I protected Ethan.”
“You protected yourself.”
Vivian looked at him with contempt.
“You would have ruined him.”
“I wasn’t his father.”
That struck her.
Her eyes widened.
Just slightly.
Ethan saw it.
“So you knew.”
Vivian recovered.
“Knew what?”
“That Robert wasn’t my father.”
Silence.
“You knew all along.”
Vivian looked toward the police.
Then back at Ethan.
“This isn’t the place.”
“Who is my father?”
“Not here.”
“WHO?”
Her composure cracked.
“Thomas.”
Nobody moved.
She said it.
Thomas Mercer.
Ethan’s grandfather.
Robert’s father.
George’s father.
The confession landed harder than any DNA result.
Ethan stared at his mother.
“No.”
Vivian’s chin lifted.
“You wanted the truth.”
Robert looked sick.
“My father?”
Vivian turned on him.
“Don’t act righteous. He was charming. Powerful. He knew exactly what he was doing.”
“You were twenty-three.”
“Yes.”
“My father was fifty-eight.”
“Yes.”
Robert looked away.
Vivian suddenly appeared exhausted.
“I became pregnant. Thomas panicked. He said his sons could never know.”
“So you married George?” Ethan asked.
“I chose the man who loved you.”
“You lied to him.”
“I gave you a father.”
“You let Robert believe I was his son.”
“It kept him away.”
“You told Samuel his baby died.”
“That kept him away too.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed three men to protect yourself.”
“To protect you!”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“To control me.”
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“You’ll understand when you’re older.”
“I’m thirty-nine.”
“You’re still my son.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“And Emmie is my daughter.”
Vivian looked away.
“You chained her outside.”
“She needed to understand—”
“Understand what?”
“That family has rules.”
Ethan stared at her.
Then something inside him finally changed.
“No.”
He took his house key from his ring.
Her key.
Placed it in her palm.
“Your rules end here.”
Vivian looked at him with disbelief.
“You’ll come crawling back.”
“No.”
“You always do.”
“Not this time.”
She smiled.
Then said something that made me realize she still had one final weapon.
“You think Claire will forgive you?”
Ethan’s face fell.
Vivian looked at me.
“She won’t.”
I didn’t answer.
Because on that point, Vivian might actually have been right.
Then one of the officers approached.
“Mrs. Vivian Mercer?”
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you regarding the incident involving your granddaughter.”
Vivian’s confidence vanished.
May you like
And for the first time in her life, the family secret wasn’t the thing she needed to fear.
Accountability was.
