Chapter 11 - THE NICU DOOR

That night, hospital security changed shifts at 11:00.
At 11:14, a man wearing blue scrubs entered the maternity floor using a stolen employee badge.
At 11:16, the NICU doors opened.
At 11:17, my phone buzzed.
CODE SECURITY - REMAIN IN YOUR ROOM.
I knew.
Before anyone told me, I knew.
I tore the monitoring wires from my chest.
A nurse tried to stop me.
“Claire, you just had surgery!”
“My baby.”
“Security is handling it.”
“My baby!”
I reached the hallway and nearly collapsed from the pain in my abdomen.
Detective Ramirez came running from the elevator.
“Back in your room.”
“Is it Ethan?”
“We don’t know.”
She did.
We both did.
Then an alarm sounded.
A security officer shouted from the far corridor.
A man burst through the double doors.
Blue scrubs.
Surgical mask.
Cap.
But I recognized his eyes.
Ethan.
He saw me.
For one second, neither of us moved.
Then he turned and ran.
“ETHAN!”
Ramirez chased him.
Security closed the elevators remotely.
Ethan hit the stairwell.
Three officers followed.
I stood against the wall, shaking.
A nurse grabbed my arm.
“Sophie is safe.”
“Where?”
“Inside.”
“Did he touch her?”
“No.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Then a crash echoed from the stairwell.
Shouting.
More footsteps.
Five minutes later, Ramirez returned.
Alone.
“He got out through the loading dock.”
“How?”
“Someone unlocked a service door.”
“Who?”
“We’re checking.”
Then Ramirez’s radio crackled.
A security officer had been found unconscious in a storage area.
His badge was missing.
Beside him, police found a burner phone.
The last incoming call had come from the county detention center.
From Margaret.
She had helped Ethan get into the hospital.
The woman who claimed her son was a problem had just guided him toward my daughter.
“Why?” I asked.
Ramirez looked grim.
“Because they’re still working together.”
That answer made no sense.
Not until Rebecca arrived an hour later carrying the final piece.
She placed a copy of my father’s trust on the table.
“Claire, we misunderstood the clause.”
“What clause?”
“The birth clause.”
She pointed.
“If Sophie remains in Ethan’s legal custody for thirty consecutive days while you’re declared incapacitated…”
She swallowed.
“He doesn’t just gain temporary control.”
“He becomes controlling trustee.”
I stared at the page.
“Permanently?”
Rebecca nodded.
They didn’t need to kill me.
They needed to take my child and convince a judge I was unstable for one month.

And Ethan had just tried to start the clock.
