The next morning, Derek Collins woke up expecting sympathy.
He expected his family to call.
He expected his friends to ask if Emily had finally "lost control again."

"Sir, the vehicle belongs to Mrs. Emily Collins."
Silence.
"What are you talking about?"
"The purchase agreement, payment records, and ownership documents are all under her name."
Derek laughed.
A nervous laugh.
"That's impossible."
The manager remained calm.
"Sir, the vehicle was purchased using Mrs. Collins' inheritance account."
Derek's face changed.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Because he remembered.
The day they bought the car.
Emily had smiled and said:
"Let's choose something safe for the baby."
He remembered how easily he signed papers.
How he told everyone:
"My wife bought us a new car."
Not:
"My wife bought herself a car."
He had changed the story.
Just like he changed everything else.
Then his phone rang.
His mother.
Eleanor Collins.
"Derek, what's going on?"
His jaw tightened.
"Nothing."
"Don't lie to me. Emily's attorney contacted us."
His stomach dropped.
"Attorney?"
"She sent a legal notice."
Derek walked into the empty parking lot.
"What did she say?"
His mother's voice lowered.
"She wants full documentation of every account you accessed during the marriage."
Derek froze.
Because Emily wasn't only taking back the car.
She was opening the door to everything.
The credit cards.
The bank accounts.
The investments.
The money he had quietly transferred.
The expensive vacations.
The lifestyle he had built using her inheritance.
