Chapter 4: The Anniversary Promise

That evening, Ethan took Lily back to the small stone church where he and Sarah had married.

The rain had stopped.

The clouds had disappeared.

And sunlight finally reached the city.

Lily carried the roses carefully.

Inside the church, Ethan placed them beside Sarah’s photograph.

The same place where he had placed flowers every October 14th.

Lily stood beside him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Will we always come here?”

Ethan smiled.

“Yes.”

“Even when I’m older?”

He looked at her.

Especially then.

“Especially when you’re older.”

Lily smiled.

Then she placed a small drawing beside the roses.

It was a picture of three people holding hands.

A mother.

A father.

A little girl.

Ethan stared at it.

His eyes became wet.

Not from sadness.

From gratitude.

Because for three years, he thought keeping Sarah’s memory alive meant holding onto the past.

But Lily had taught him something different.

Love was not about staying trapped in yesterday.

Love was about carrying someone’s memory while continuing to live.

Later that night, Ethan returned to the Grand Regent.

The same lobby.

The same marble floor.

But everything felt different.

Patricia stood behind the desk.

This time, when an exhausted traveler walked in wearing old clothes, she smiled.

“Welcome to the Grand Regent.”

Not because she knew who they were.

Not because of their money.

But because they were human.

Ethan watched from a distance.

And he smiled.

The hotel had changed.

But so had he.

For years, Ethan carried the weight of an anniversary.

A day filled with memories.

A day filled with pain.

But now he understood something Sarah had always known.

The greatest way to honor someone you love…

Is not to live without them.

It is to live in a way that proves their love still exists.

Ethan held Lily’s hand as they walked toward the exit.

Outside, Chicago was shining after the storm.

And for the first time in three years…

October 14th did not feel like the day he lost Sarah.

It felt like the day he remembered how much she had given him.

A family.

A daughter.

May you like

A love that never disappeared.

THE END
