Chapter 1 - The Twenty-Foot Fall

Elena Marquez saw the briefcase coming one second before it hit her.

“Judge Vale—don’t.”

The heavy leather corner smashed across her cheek.

Pain exploded behind her eyes.

Her heel slipped off the white marble balcony.

And suddenly there was nothing beneath her.

Elena dropped twenty feet.

She heard someone scream.

Maybe it was her.

The stone fountain rushed toward her face. She twisted in the air, struck the edge of a canvas awning, tore through it, and slammed into wet grass beside the fountain with a sickening crack.

For several seconds, the world disappeared.

Above her, Judge Harrison Vale leaned over the balcony railing.

He was sixty-one, silver-haired, expensive, and terrifyingly calm.

Beside him stood his mother, Evelyn Vale, the eighty-year-old matriarch of the family, wearing diamonds at noon and enough gold around her neck to buy a small house.

Evelyn looked down at Elena’s motionless body.

Then she straightened one of her bracelets.

“Is she dead?” she asked.

Harrison stared.

“She better be.”

His voice carried through the courtyard.

Elena couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breathe.

But she could hear.

And that terrified her more than the fall.

Harrison turned away from the railing.

“Call Mercer.”

Evelyn frowned. “The sheriff?”

“He owes me.”

“What about the staff?”

“They saw an accident.”

“And if they didn’t?”

Harrison looked at her.

“They will.”

Elena’s fingers twitched in the grass.

Memory flashed through her mind.

The locked study.

The files.

Bank transfers.

Names.

A federal judge selling sealed information to businessmen under investigation.

And the voice recording Elena had made ten minutes earlier.

Harrison admitting everything.

She had confronted him because she’d been stupid enough to believe even powerful men feared exposure.

Instead, he had smiled.

Locked the balcony door.

And reached for his briefcase.

Sirens sounded beyond the estate gates.

Fast.

Too fast.

Elena understood.

Someone had already been called before she fell.

This wasn’t panic.

It was a plan.

Footsteps rushed toward her.

A man knelt beside her.

“Ma’am? Can you hear me?”

Elena recognized Deputy Owen Price.

She forced one eye open.

“Don’t move,” he whispered. “Ambulance is coming.”

Then Harrison appeared.

“Deputy.”

Price looked up.

Judge Vale stood ten feet away, perfectly composed.

“My assistant became hysterical,” Harrison said. “She threatened to hurt herself. Then she jumped.”

Elena wanted to scream.

Nothing came out.

Price stared at him.

“You saw her jump?”

“My mother and I both did.”

Evelyn slowly approached.

“Terrible girl,” she said. “Very unstable lately.”

Elena felt rage burning through the pain.

Price leaned closer to her.

“Elena, stay with me.”

Harrison’s shoes stopped beside her head.

Polished black leather.

Not one drop of blood.

“You need to secure the estate,” he told Price. “Nobody leaves until I’ve spoken with Sheriff Mercer.”

Price’s jaw tightened.

“With respect, Judge, you don’t give orders at my crime scene.”

Harrison smiled.

“This isn’t a crime scene.”

For the first time, Elena opened both eyes.

Price froze.

Harrison’s smile vanished.

Elena grabbed the deputy’s sleeve.

Her lips barely moved.

Price bent closer.

“What?”

She forced out three broken words.

“Check… his… briefcase.”

Harrison went completely still.

Then Deputy Price looked up at him.

And Judge Harrison Vale finally looked afraid.
