Chapter 11 - HE CAME FOR ME

Derek walked toward the house carrying flowers.

Flowers.

After everything.

My mother stared through the window.

“Is he insane?”

“No.”

I finally understood.

“He thinks this still works.”

Detective Sloan had gone home two hours earlier.

But two local officers were already on their way because of the threatening messages.

Dad wanted to meet Derek outside.

I stopped him.

“No.”

“He came to my house.”

“He came for me.”

I opened the front door but kept the storm door locked.

Derek stood on the porch.

White roses in one hand.

His wedding ring still on his finger.

“Chloe.”

“What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk.”

“No.”

His smile faltered.

“Just five minutes.”

“No.”

“I love you.”

There it was.

The line that had controlled me for years.

Tonight it sounded ridiculous.

“You forged my signature.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You tried to borrow millions against my company.”

“I was building our future.”

“You attempted to change my life insurance beneficiary.”

His face hardened.

“Husbands are usually beneficiaries.”

“Not husbands who secretly change the paperwork fourteen hours after the wedding.”

He stepped closer to the glass.

“My mother got in your head.”

I almost laughed.

“Your mother?”

“She creates drama.”

“She always has.”

“Don't let her destroy us.”

The speed with which he betrayed Brenda was astonishing.

He saw my expression.

“Chloe, listen to me.”

“I chose you.”

“No.”

“You selected me.”

His smile vanished.

“For what I owned.”

“That is ridiculous.”

“We found your files.”

Silence.

A tiny movement passed across his face.

Fear.

I continued.

“We found Natalie's files too.”

His eyes widened.

That was the moment Derek knew this was over.

Not emotionally.

Legally.

His flowers dropped slightly.

“Natalie is lying.”

“Mallory isn't.”

That landed harder.

“What did she tell you?”

“Enough.”

He turned toward his car.

Then stopped.

“You stole documents from my family.”

“Your sister gave them to investigators.”

His head snapped back toward me.

“You called police?”

“You forged legal documents.”

His voice rose.

“You're my wife.”

“And?”

“You don't do this to your husband.”

The absurdity was breathtaking.

“You locked me in a bedroom.”

“That was private.”

“You stole my phone.”

“We're married.”

“You tried to take control of my company.”

“I was protecting us.”

“You humiliated me in front of your family.”

“You were disrespecting my mother.”

Every answer proved the same thing.

In Derek's mind, marriage had not created partnership.

It had created ownership.

A car turned onto the driveway.

Blue lights flashed.

Derek looked over his shoulder.

His face changed completely.

The charming husband disappeared.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I opened the inner door while leaving the storm door locked.

“You planned everything.”

“I simply stopped cooperating.”

The officers stepped out.

Derek backed away from the porch.

One officer called his name.

He did not run.

He was too proud for that.

Instead, he looked directly at me.

“This isn't finished.”

I believed him.

But not for the reason he intended.

Because the next morning, investigators searched the mansion.

And hidden behind the same wall where I had found my escape staircase, they discovered a locked cabinet containing files on five women.

Including me.

May you like

And one of those women had disappeared three years earlier.
